Thunder River opened at Waldameer in 1996 to celebrate the park's 100th operating year. It was the replacement for Mill Run, which closed the previous year. It features cars shaped like logs, each of which contains two two-passenger rows. There are no restraints in these cars, though they do include rails inside to hold onto. At the bottom of the second drop are several upcharge water bombs.
The ride's layout consists mostly of water-filled troughs which a boat will travel through. It features a tunnel that includes lightning and thunder sound and light effects, a small drop dubbed "Little Thunder", and a larger drop known as "Big Thunder". An on-ride photo is taken on the latter, and until 2024, it was the only on-ride photo available in the park. The ride's entrance is located in the western end of the park, near XScream.
This log flume features an identical layout to the log flume which once operated at the short-lived, ill-fated Six Flags New Orleans.
