Hello to my general music students!!
First of all- I miss you all very much!! I am thinking of you every day and hoping that you are all finding interesting ways to spend time with your family, get lots of exercise, keep learning and have fun. We are all learning together how to work online!

I can't wait to see you all again. By the way, this photo was taken in San Francisco, California. My husband and I were there when my son got married several years ago. When we were walking through town this group of Chinese musicians invited me to play. It was so much fun! They didn't speak English and I don't speak Chinese- but it didn't matter. We made music together anyway!

Hello Everyone!
Hello Everyone!
I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful weather and getting outside a lot right now. One of my favorite things to do at this time of they year is to see all the different birds who are appearing. There are lots of nests being built and if you go outside towards the end of the day, around 6 pm, you'll hear so many birdsongs! Can you identify any of them? I am still waiting for the redwing blackbirds to arrive. They have a really neat trill that they do that is easy to recognize. And catbirds really sound like cats! We even had two ducks land in our pool yesterday. They don't sing, but they visit every year at this time and swim in the creek next to our house. So- your assignment for this week and next is to get outside and listen. See how many different songs you can hear. If you're lucky, you'll be able to watch them while they sing and then you'll know who is who. Remember "Follow the Drinking Gourd?", one of the lines was: "When the sun comes back and the first quail calls". That's the line that describes spring down south. What song can you invent for the spring up here??? Send my your ideas. I would love to hear from you!! Remember to hug those parents of yours! You will find some interesting pictures of "birds" below. They're all made from plants and are gigantic! It's from a trip to Montreal, Canada. Enjoy!!

Can you believe Easter was yesterday??? And that it snowed, and then was almost 60 degrees out? I think that's what I love most about spring. Weird weather. So, I thought I'd send you a challenge today. I found my class pictures from when I was in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade. I'm going to post them here and you can try to find me. Keep in mind that these pictures were taken waaaaay back in the 1960's!! Go-go boots and mini-skirts were all the rage. When I went to the beach, (which I did every day during the summer) I listened to The Beatles on my transistor radio. Yes. I was very cool!

By the way, this is what a transistor radio looks like. It ran on batteries and you turned the big dial to get to a different station. The volume dial is on the side. There was no such thing as headphones so you always heard a wide variety of music when you walked from your towel down to the water to swim. Everyone was careful not to play their radio too loud so it didn't bother other people. Now, you don't know what people are listening to because we are listening all alone. I miss hearing new and different music. I miss music class!!!

This week we celebrate Earthday and Arbor Day and it's the first day of Ramadan (I'll tell you more about that holiday next week). I am seeing more and more birds in my garden who are building nests and singing like crazy. We even had a pair of ducks in our pool! I work in front of a big window in my kitchen where I have a bird's eye view (ha ha) of the birds. The redwing blackbirds have returned. I can hear the trill that they make but I still haven't spotted them down at the creek next to my house. They are really pretty birds and when they fly, they puff up their red shoulder feathers. Watch for them this week and get outside and listen to all the different bird calls. It's one of my favorite kinds of music!
