On the left, under song list, scroll down to song #1. It's called "Mama Don't Allow." Press play on the movie and then pause it so you can take a look at the music.
First, read the words. What do you think the person who wrote them meant?
Now take a look at the rhythms. The very first one is actually one we haven't learned yet, but I bet you can do it! Instead of four sixteenth notes - it's two sixteenth notes with an eighth note. For that rhythm, we say, "1 ee and." Can you spot the syncopation? Remember for that, you can either say "syncopa "or "ti-ta-ti." Remember it's "short-long-short." The last "anyhow" rhythm is also syncopation, but it's faster. For that one, we say "1 ee ah."
Sing along with the "Mama Don't Allow." Once you know it, see if you can sing it without looking at the words!
Create an ostinato that goes with the song. Remember that's a pattern that repeats over and over. Create an ostinato using body percussion or instruments you have at home. You could even use something at your house that isn't a traditional instrument like spoons, a box of cereal, or a glass with water in it. Be creative! Write down your ostinato using symbols or music rhythms. Then, perform your ostinato with the song.
5. Teach the song to someone in your family.
6. Send me a picture of your ostinato or even better, a picture or video of you playing and singing "Mama Don't Allow!"

Interesting fact: As I was watching this video on youtube, I realized I recognized the drummer in the video! He went to the same high school I did - Honeoye Falls Lima and his name is Ted Poor. Pretty cool!
