On the left, under song list, scroll down to song #15. It's called "Canoe Song." This song is from Canada and is similar to songs that Native Americans sang years ago. It was sung to keep time while paddling a canoe and is also sung around campfires. Press play on the movie and pause it once you can see the words.
Read the words. What do they mean?
Why do you think the paddle is flashing with silver?
What does dip, dip, and swing mean?
Clap and say the rhythms. Do you remember that first rhythm of the song? It's called syncopation and you can either say "syncopa "or "ti-ta-ti." Remember it's "short-long-short."
Sing along with the "Canoe Song." Once you know it, see if you can sing it without looking at the words!
Create an ostinato that goes with the song. Remember that's a pattern that repeats over and over. Create an ostinato using body percussion or instruments you have at home. You could even use something at your house that isn't a traditional instrument like spoons, a box of cereal, or a glass with water in it. Be creative! Write down your ostinato using symbols or music rhythms. Then, perform your ostinato with the song.
5. Teach the song to someone in your family.
6. Send me a picture of your ostinato or even better, a picture or video of you playing and singing the "Canoe Song!"
7. Want an extra challenge? Try singing the song in a round with someone in your family.
Here's a link to a recording of that!
