Remember this cup song we learned in December? Teach it to your family!

Two Canadian Folk Songs

On the left, under song list, scroll down to song #33. It's called "Two Canadian Folk Songs." This song takes the two songs from the past two weeks - "Canoe Song" and "Land of the Silver Birch" and puts them together. Why can these songs be sung at the same time? They are partner songs which means that their melodies fit together nicely, creating harmony. Press play on the movie.

  1. Sing "Land of the Silver Birch."

  2. Sing "Canoe Song."

  3. When the songs are sung together - sing "Land of the Silver Birch." Can you keep your part going?

  4. Now try the same thing, with "Canoe Song." Can you keep your part going?

5. Have someone in your family sing one part while you sing the other.

6. Just above the movie, click on Kids Demo #1. Watch a chorus perform this song. What do you think of it? Can you do their motions while you sing?

7. Watch Kids Demo #2. Join in the drumming part either by patting on your knees, or play on something you have at your house. Can you determine the rhythm the drummer is playing?

8. Which chorus did you prefer? Why?

Handel - "Prelude to the Alchemist"

On the far left - click on listening. Next click on Kit 4. Scroll down to Song #5. Check out the listening log and answer the questions. Click on analysis and reflect as you listen. Click on Play Along- play the rhythms using body percussion or whatever instruments you have at home. Remember you can make music with just about anything! Finally, click on Composer to learn about Handel, a famous composer during the Baroque era of music.

What do you think of Handel's music?
