How should my practice routine look?

Here are some tips:

  • Do a good warm-up: Rudiments, scales, interval singing

  • Snare Drum Solos:

      • Level 1/2

          • Long Roll: Play the roll closed only (not open) for approximately 20 seconds to demonstrate ability to play smooth, controlled bounce strokes

          • Rudiments: 5-Stroke Roll, 9-Stroke Roll, Flam, Flam Tap, Drag, Single Paradiddle

      • Level 3/4

          • Long Roll: Slow Open -> Fast Open -> buzz for 10 seconds -> Fast Open -> Slow Open

          • Rudiments: 7-Stroke Roll, 13-Stroke Roll, 17-Stroke Roll, Single Drag Tap, Single Ratamacue, Lesson 25, Flam Accent, Flamacue, Flam Paradiddle, Double Paradiddle

  • Mallet Solos

    • Practice playing your scales from memory- be sure to go in alphabetical order and apply the correct flats and sharps. Think of memorizing scales like a spelling test, a little a week will help make you successful. Review the scales you memorize every time you practice, have a family member test you!

      • Level 1/2

          • Prepare the C, F, and G Major scales and arpeggios

          • Two octaves ascending and descending at quarter note = 80

      • Level 3/4

          • Prepare the F, G, A, Bb, C, D and Eb Major scales and arpeggios

          • Two octaves ascending and descending at quarter note = 100

          • Prepare the above scales to be rolled as harmonic octaves (double stops) ascending only for one octave

          • The adjudicator will ask for one scale to be rolled in double stops and two other scale and arpeggio patterns

  • Timpani Solos

      • Roll

          • Level 1-4: The single stroke timpani will be played on the large drum. Begin the roll piano, gradually crescendo to forte, maintain this level for approximately 10 seconds, gradually decrescendo to piano.

      • Tuning Intervals

          • Level 1/2: Prepare to tune BOTH of the following intervals within 30 seconds:

              • Perfect 4th - "Here comes the bride"

              • Perfect 5th - "Twinkle Twinkle"

          • Level 3/4: Prepare to tune all of the following intervals within 30 seconds (TWO of these intervals will be chosen by the Adjudicator)

  • RECRUITMENT ASSIGNMENT!!! - send to marinid@victorschools.org

    • Thank you to all students who have already submitted something! I'm loving your enthusiasm and creativity!

  • This week, I would like all groups to work on the Recruitment Assignment, if you have not already submitted something for it. This can be in the form of a written emailed response, an audio file, or a video.

  • Instructions can be found at the top of this page.

  • I have left last week's assignment up so that you may also catch up if you have not submitted an assignment yet.

  • If you have already submitted something for the "Recruitment Assignment" and have done your group's assignment from last week, then you may work on fun music at the bottom of this page and submit a recording of that.

All groups should work on the "Video Assignment for All Intermediate Musicians" that all of our musicians are encouraged to participate in. The music department is creating a few videos to share with our community to show how awesome the Victor Music Programs are and also to help with our 3rd Grade Recruitment, as things are going to have to be done a little differently this year. We need your help! Read the project details below and get in on the fun in a way you feel most comfortable. There are several ways you can join in. This will be part of your assignment for the next 3 weeks (Due May 15th), so take your time, be creative and please join in on the fun!

*** Please record the following Scales/Rudiments/Book assignments and send them to me this week. They do not have to be all sent at once. Take your time, there is no speed requirement. :) ***
