Introduction

Stalybridge Archery club was founded in the mid 1950’s, but it was not until 1958 that the club officially came into being, when it affiliated to the sport’s governing bodies. Since then the club has gone on to produce many fine archers, numbering amongst its past and present members, county champions, national record holders and even Olympic competitors.

The clubs membership is very diverse, made up of people from all walks of life, different ethnic origins and an age range spanning from 10 to 90+. There are several families, some spanning three generations, a large junior section, composed of both girls and boys, and a senior section which includes a large proportion of ladies, many of whom are very active within the clubs management system.

The clubs principle discipline is target archery, but all members are encouraged to try their hand at the other disciplines of the sport, which are Field and Clout.

The club has a long, proud and successful competitive history, with many members having actively taken part in tournaments spanning the length of the country, from Dunster in Somerset to the Isle of Skye in Scotland.  These tournaments range in scale from world record status events, national, regional and county tournaments, open club tournaments and inter club shoots.

The club also has a proud history of members being actively involved in the sport as officials, ranging from county to International level.

These include most notably an honorary member who was qualified as a National Judge with ArcheryGB, a Continental Judge with World Archery Europe and an International Judge Candidate with World Archery. He also held the post of Judge Liaison officer for the Cheshire Archery Association and Northern Counties Archery Society, as well as being a member of the National judge committee. He was on the judging teams at two Archery World Cups, Dover 2007 & Wroclaw Poland 2014. Four European championships, Rovereto Target Championships 2010, Sassari 3D Championships 2010, Trakoscan 3D Championships 2012, Ljubljana Target Championships 2014. The London Olympic archery test event in 2011 and the London 2012 Olympic archery event, which was held at Lord’s cricket ground.

The club currently has three level 1 and one level 2 coach, who between them oversee the beginner’s courses run by the club, and who are available to help, advise and offer assistance to all club members with any aspect of their shooting.

The club also caters for those archers who feel they are not yet ready for open tournaments, and/or, who just don't like to shoot away from the club. This is done by staging its own competitions, which are held throughout the year on a regular basis, and are designed to be fun while encouraging the improvement of shooting skills of all archers taking part, but most especially those of the less experienced.

The club also has a social side, which ranges from members gathering just to have a quite chat in the tranquil settings of the clubs grounds, to organised events including fun shoots + BBQ, quiz nights, Christmas parties and even holidays encompassing an Archery tournament.
