Drinkhall Route Into Portland

Route 2

1924

F. N. Drinkhall's 1924 "Field Notes"

"Initially, officials classified certain roads from Portland as 'access roads' to the highway. However, 'Field Notes' compiled by F. N. Drinkhall, Oregon State Highway Department in 1924, documents the highway's path through Portland. The highway passed through Linnton into Portland along the west bank of the Willamette River quite similarly to its later configuration. However, to reach milepost 0.0, it came via N.W. Thurman and 16th Avenue to Burnside, then east via S.W. Washington to Broadway."

Mershon, 2006, 51

Between Mershon's comment and the photo below, it seems clear that, while there may have technically been an official CRH route out of the city, for practical purposes, it really came down to which ever route through the local street grid was the most convenient at the time.

Portland, St. Helens Road to Milepost Zero (v.007)Google Earth

From what I've put together from various sources, the map above shows what I believe to be the most accurate route from Milepost Zero out of town. Of course, today many of these are one-way streets in the wrong direction and freeway construction has disrupted some of the routes. But this is the route that I am using until I find hard evidence proving otherwise...

EASTBOUND TO MILEPOST ZERO:

  • Modern US 30 to St. Helens Road
  • St Helens Road to NW 29th
  • NW 29th to NW Thurman
  • NW Thurman to NW 16th
  • NW 16th to NW Washington (at Burnside)

WESTBOUND FROM MILEPOST ZERO:

    • NW Washington to NW 16th (at Burnside)
    • NW 16th to NW Thurman
    • NW Thurman to NW 29th
    • NW 29th to St Helens Road
    • St. Helens Road to Modern US 30

"Motorists using Portland's visitors guides were advised to drive down NW Thurman, turning right on 28th and passing the world's largest log building, the Forestry Center (alas, consumed by flames in August of 1964). A left onto Upshur and a right on 29th led to St. Helens Road. Because the city has blockaded NW 29th so it is no longer a through street, motorists today must travel down NW Vaughn and past Montgomery Park if they wish to reach [St. Helens Road at NW Wardway and NW Nicolai Road]."
