"The first written record of the Indian word Multnomah, for which Multnomah County is named, came from Lewis and Clark. In 1805 they wrote of the 'Mult-no-mâh' (now the Willamette River), attributing the name to the Indians who lived along the lower part of the river near its confluence with the Columbia. Some linguists believe the word is a corruption of the Chinookan nematlnomaq, meaning 'the people living downriver,' in reference to those who inhabited the land downriver of the falls of the Willamette, near today's Oregon City."
