There are two parts you must have when getting a character ready for submission: the visual application and the written application.
Both must be submitted at the same time for review!
This page details what is and is not allowed for character designs, the types of clothing you're allowed to use by default, and what ways a character's body may be changed to become something more fantastical!
If you are choosing the Solo Leader or Team with a Friend option, use the single application template.
The single application template is also used for future non-Mythical recruits.
If you are choosing the Two-Leader Team option, use the duo application template.
✦ Application art must be fullbody and cannot use bases or be traced
✦ Flat color is required, but shading is optional
✦ Collaborations, commissions, and adopted designs are allowed as long as they are used with permission and credited appropriately
✦ You may change the color of the background
This is a Gijinka group, which means that your character should be a humanoid with Pokemon attributes. Gijinkas can have elements such as ears, tails, eyes, hair, teeth, and claws inspired by the Pokemon they are based on. Your character cannot be an anthro/furry.
For example, a Charizard gijinka could be a person with Charizard's wings, horns, and tails but is otherwise primarily humanoid with a human's face and proportions. As a baseline, we recommending making your gijinka roughly 75% human(oid) and 25% Pokemon.
These percentages are not strict and are merely a place to start!
Characters are allowed to have fantasy skintones, however depending on the level of detail, the design may require a Potion or other transformative item to be allowed.
A general rule of thumb is if the only thing "strange" about your character's skin is that it's of an unconventional color (i.e. no glowing marks, no translucent skin, not made of material and has no material add-ons such as plants or gemstones, etc.), it is permissible.
Ghost Pokemon may have ghostly / wispy limbs, limited to only 2!
With a Potion or Juice, you'll be allowed to modify of your character's body, however for base designs, we require that they are still mainly corporeal and cannot be visibly showing bones, organs, or other gorey elements.
Characters may have exposed bones or see-through body parts only if there is no gore or internal organs visible! A good example of this is shown on the character Melinoë from Hades 2.
Gijinkas can have up to 1 additional set of eyes (up to 4 eyes maximum) only if it makes sense with the Pokemon they are based on and only on their face! Eyes in strange places such as on hands or stomach are not allowed.
Extra eyes cannot be grotesque or horror-inspired or otherwise deliberately meant to be disturbing to others.
For example, a Joltik may have an additional set of eyes.
Attire, accessories, prosthetics/disability aids, and additional gadgets that visually fit within the loosely Victorian Era time period of the setting are allowed. Anything more modern-looking, futuristic, or cyberpunk-inspired may require a Potion or Accessory Pack depending on how advanced it is!
Any object-based aids created with magic are allowed such as an enchanted scarf that acts as a "hand" for a character who does not have the ability to use their own.
When it comes to what is and is not allowed in terms of characters with bare chests and/or other revealing attire (or lack thereof), the group follows a loose set of guidelines regardless of gender. Designs will ultimately be checked case-by-case by moderators.
However, as a rule-of-thumb, ask yourself...
✦ ...if the character's appearance would be considered public indecency in the real world
✦ ...if the character's application art will need a warning applied or to be hidden when uploaded to your art site of choice
(i.e. DeviantArt, Toyhouse, Unvale, etc)
If the answer to one or both is "yes", then the character should have an outfit that covers their skin appropriately -- at least for the visual application.
Members are allowed to depict nudity in works that are submitted for Poke as long as it is not sexually explicit. If you wanted to have an alternate look for a character who doesn't quite work with the above questions, you are free to use that version of the design in future submitted work -- even if it's a different look from their application art -- as long as it's been appropriately tagged.
Some gijinkas are also allowed to have builds like mythological creatures such as centaurs, mermaids, and satyrs -- as long as it suits the Pokemon.
Explanations of what is and is not allowed for each fantasy body type are below.
➤ Insectoids (i.e. driders, characters with the lower body of an insect)
At this time, you cannot create a character with an insectoid lower-body that has multiple pairs of legs (i.e. drider), even with the use of a Potion or a Juice.
However, you can create a two-legged character with spindly bug-like legs.
➤ Winged
The gijinka may have wings if their Pokemon species also has wings. Doing this is free only if the Pokemon has wings.
Wings on the gijinka should match the wings on the Pokemon's feral form unless the character has used a Potion or Juice.
For non-winged Pokemon:
If the Pokemon does not have wings, you need to use a Potion or Juice to achieve this. Potions allow a character to have wings as long as they match the theming. If none of those Potions work for you however (or if you wish to have wings and use a different Potion), you may want to try Monster Juice instead!
Common examples of Potions/Juices that can and cannot grant wings:
Ethereal Potion typically grants feathered wings, and can be used to grant multiple pairs of feathered wings to a character (akin to angels that have multiple wings).
Fiendish Potion typically grants devilish, bat-like wings.
Seasonal Potion can be used to grant fairy wings or other nature-themed fantasy wings.
Animal Potion can grant 1 pair of wings to non-winged characters but only if they match the real-world animal being used (such as pigeon wings on a pigeon-themed design or bee wings to a bee-themed design).
For animals that may have multiple wings such as a dragonfly, an exception can be made.
All designs of this nature must be checked in #design-check!
Monster Juice can be used to grant wings to a character that match the monstrous theming (such as dragon wings or harpy wings).
➤ Nagas (i.e. characters with the lower body of a snake or serpent)
The gijinka may have a naga lower body only if the Pokemon is serpentine. This includes reptilian Pokemon with long bodies such as Ekans, Dratini, Serperior, Dreepy, etc.
For non-serpentine Pokemon:
Potions and Juices do not allow for the removal of a feral Pokemon's limbs to turn them more serpentine, so this feature is restricted to serpentine Pokemon only.
Scales and other subtle repitilian features such as slit eyes and a forked tongue may be added if it matches the theme of the Potion and/or Juice used.
➤ Fish and aquatic (i.e. characters based on oceanic animals such as fish, sharks, whales, seahorses, eels, octopi, etc.)
These function similarly to nagas in that the lower body may be changed. The gijinka may have a mermaid tail lower body only if the Pokemon is aquatic and has a tail.
Cephalopod Pokemon or aquatic Pokemon with tentacles (such as ones based on jellyfish) may have a lower body comprised of tentacles instead of a mermaid tail! This is similar to Ursula from Disney's The Little Mermaid.
For non-aquatic Pokemon:
Some Potions and/or Juices may allow for aquatic-themed designs that permit granting your non-aquatic Pokemon a fish's tail or gills. In these cases, you may give your gijinka a mermaid tail.
➤ Satyrs, bird legs, pawed feet, etc. (i.e. two-legged humanoid characters with the lower body of a creature with legs)
The gijinka may have animalistic legs that match their base Pokemon species. This is free for all characters without using a Potion or Juice but the legs must match the feral form.
For other Pokemon:
Monster Juice may be used to achieve this look if it is not possible for the character's species.
For example, a Togepi gijinka would not be able to have hooved satyr legs normally. With Monster Juice, it can have hooved satyr legs if its Monster Juice theme is that of a satyr.
➤ Centaurs (i.e. four-legged humanoid characters with the lower body of a four-legged creature)
The gijinka may be a centaur if their Pokemon species is four-legged and has hooves. This can include any Pokemon based on horses, cows, deer, goats, moose, giraffes, etc.
For non-hooved Pokemon:
For Pokemon without hooves, the gijinka may only be a taur if the base Pokemon species is quadrupedal (i.e. it has four legs)!
Characters that fall under that category may have a taur body by using a Gijinka Form Change (5,000p) item.
Potions and Juices do not cover this type of change.
Potions and Juices are not a catch-all solution however, and there are still limits to what you can do with them if you are aiming to achieve a specific fantasy body type with a specific Pokemon. It is always best to ask the staff if you are unsure about anything!
A few examples of what is and is not permitted are as follows:
As a gijinka, your character can be:
✅ a Ponyta with a centaur body
✅ a Popplio with a mermaid tail
✅ a Tentacool with a tentacled lower body
✅ a Deerling with deer legs/hooves
✅ a Starly with feathered wings
As a gijinka, your character cannot be:
❌ a Bulbasaur with a mermaid tail
❌ a Froakie with goat legs
❌ a Pichu with wings of any kind
❌ a Swablu with dragon-like wings
❌ a Kirlia with a centaur body
Along with the humanoid / gijinka forms that characters have, characters in this world also have a feral form, which is their base Pokemon form! They are transformed into their feral forms when entering Mystery Dungeons and potentially in other areas around the world.
Characters cannot freely transform between their feral and gijinka forms however.
A major rule of thumb used when approving designs is that the design must have a distinct silhouette that can be recognized as the Pokemon's original design.
For example, if you were to look at the silhouette of a Pikachu, it would be immediately obvious what species the Pokemon is. There is leeway allowed when it comes to this rule as there are things to account for such as art style, accessories, pose, etc. but it's important to keep in mind when designing your feral!
Currently, the only way to make major silhouette breaks is to use a transformative item like a Potion or Juice or to use the Hair Accessory Pack. Regardless of item usage however, designs will still be judged on a case-by-case basis and so it is not guaranteed than an item will allow certain silhouette breaks!
Feral designs are allowed to have minor changes such as small palette changes, patterns, and physical differences or interpretations are allowed as long as they stay close to the original design of the Pokemon.
For example, a normal Zorua's red markings could be a slightly darker red but you would not be able to turn them pink without the use of a transformative item. Another example is the popular interpretation of Sigilyph as a bird-like entity being allowed.
Large-scale changes to a Pokemon's color and / or anatomy such as adding wings or horns or changing the size of its claws will require the use of transformative items like Potions, Juices, or a Form Modification Pack.
For simple color or pattern changes, you may want to use a Hue Berry or Deco Berry.
Pokemon with fur or hair on their head(s) are allowed to have it somewhat stylized. While you are allowed to do things like give your Eevee bangs or have your Kirlia with pigtails, anything that would drastically break the silhouette of the Pokemon or make it difficult to make out the shape of its head cannot be used on unaltered Pokemon designs. Non-furred species may also not have "hair" by default.
There is an item to allow you to break these conventions however, letting you give your feral full on ponytails and styled hair and allowing non-furred Pokemon to have styled "hair" with materials that match its body. If you want to do this, you need to have a Hair Accessory Pack.
For Pokemon with multiple forms such as Burmy, Oricorio (if unspecified), Rotom, Furfrou, and Castform, you may choose one of their forms to use when submitting your character. This is the form they will take by default. The form may only be changed after submitting by using the Pokemon Form Change item.
Similarly for Pokemon with regional variants, if the regional form you received was unspecified (such as when rolling for your leaders), you can freely choose whenever form you'd like! In order to change the regional form later, you must use the Regional Potion item.
