Get Started Today With Pigeon Farming...
If you plan to start a pigeon farm, follow these tips:
1. Find a good location. Your pigeons need to feel safe and secure in their loft, so choose a quiet area away from other farms.
2. If possible, build your loft on stilts. This will protect your birds from predators like foxes and cats. Draping netting over the side of the loft can also help protect them from birds of prey.
I had a pigeon fly into my window and drop dead on my front porch. I had no idea what to do with it so I started some research. I found out you can raise pigeons for meat, eggs, and even racing. I also found out if you let pigeons nest on your house they will keep returning every year to lay their eggs.
First thing you have to do is gather up some pigeon facts. Pigeons are fast breeders, lay around two eggs each time, and the chicks become independent in about 6 weeks. That means you will have a lot of pigeons in 3 months. They start reproducing at about 6 months old. Another thing is that if you want to breed them for meat, eggs or racing you should sort them by gender so you don't end up with a bunch of baby birds. To do this look at the cere which is the nose part above the beak. If it is blue or brown then it is male and if it is white or pink then it's female.
Once you have decided what kind of pigeon you want to raise, get some housing ready for them. The best thing would be to build a shed because they need protection against the elements and predators like hawks and dogs.
