Get Started Today With Pigeon Farming...
Hi. I am a young entrepreneur in Kenya with a passion for high quality, affordable poultry farming. I would like to start a family business of pigeon farming.
I have done a lot of research and there is a huge market for the birds. The birds are used for both meat and eggs, which are in high demand, especially in cities like Nairobi. Pigeon farming has also been described as one of the most profitable animal businesses in the world.
The main challenge seems to be getting started -- finding the right place, getting the right birds and bird feed, etc. I was wondering if you would help me get started? I am ready to give it my all but need some guidance on how to get started with the basics.
Thank you very much for your time.
Pigeon farming is a good business for both rural and urban people. It does not require much space and can be started with little amount of money.
There are two types of pigeons: fancy pigeons and utility pigeons. The fancy variety comes in various shapes, colours and sizes while the utility pigeon has only one purpose – they are raised for their meat which is called squab. A squab is a young domestic pigeon that has not yet fledged or fully developed its feathers.
In Kenya, poultry keeping is mainly practiced by small-scale farmers who keep birds in backyards, in cages or confined spaces under intensive management systems.
Pigeon farming requires minimal space, less feeding stuffs and water, less labor as compared to other livestock farming like chicken, turkey, duck etc. It also generates more income than any other livestock business.
