Conservation Members qualify as First Aiders
On 3rd April Garth Perry, Paul Quemby and Bob Gregory-Smith were among eight volunteers from the Langdyke Trust who attended an all day course to gain two qualifications - Emergency First Aid at Work and Forestry First Aid. The course was held in the West Deeping Village Hall on a bright but initially cold day.
The courses were run by a group called Decisive First Aid, and the tutor was a retired Paramedic, Andrew Barras, who was very knowledgeable as well as being a good and engaging tutor.
The qualifications for both courses were awarded by First Aid Awards, an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual and SQA Accreditation. The first course was a standard First Aid course dealing with all sorts of first aid situations from minor bruises to major incidents including the use of a defibrillator. The second course was a supplementary course more directed at the injuries that may be encountered in forestry or agricultural situations which was highly relevant to the conservation work we undertake.
Of course we hope that we will never be called on to exercise our skills for real, but at least we are properly prepared if a medical emergency situation should arise.
As the weather was so good many of the practical exercises were able to be held outside on the grass at the end of the car park. In the picture below Garth is seen practicing bandaging an arm wound on Paul Quemby.

Stuart Morgan's Charity Cycle Ride 2024
At the Annual Dinner last year our MC, Stuart Morgan, told us that he was undertaking a charity cycle ride from Lands End to John O’Groats (known often as E2E or End to End) in June to raise funds for the Peterborough Oncology Ward.
He started on June 2nd last year and it took him 19 days to complete the approximately 900 miles, a lot of it with adverse winds. That was not his only adversity, because on day 3 a truck ran him off the road, and he had to cycle the remaining 16 days with a cracked rib. His target was to raise £2000. In the event he actually raised a total of £3009, which he was proud to present to the Oncology Ward.
Stuart wants to express his thanks to those Club members who supported him with donations, and the Club would like to congratulate Stuart on completing something that most of us would never even contemplate attempting. Not only that, but he exceeded his target by 50%. Well done Stuart!
He must be a glutton for punishment, because he said he has not ruled out attempting it again, maybe in a couple of years’ time!

Anna Errico reports on another membership day yesterday, the Club managed to recruit four new members.
This was our last recruitment day for 2024. "It was lovely being back and we were made most welcome by the staff " she added.
In total for 2024, we recruited 25 new members, albeit not all on recruitment days, but still a very good achievement all round.
We also have two further new members who have paid cash and their membership will commence in 2025, so that will be a good start to 2025.

Anna Errico, Membership Secretary reports a very successful recruitment day at Perkins on 18th September: "we secured four new members with six potential members who took forms away simply because they could not remember their people soft number, which is a requirement if paying via one’s salary. So hopefully by the end of September we will have recruited 10 new members".
It was a team effort, thanks to Alan Wells, Adrian Talbot, Garth Perry and Michelle Wyld who all helped out on the day.

Perkins 90th Anniversary Celebration Open Day – A recruiting success!
2022 marked the 90th Anniversary of Perkins Engines Co. Ltd. The Company marked the occasion with an Open Day on 17th September at which the Club was invited to have a stand. The primary purpose of the stand was to advertise the presence of the Club and to recruit more current employees and we are delighted to report that it was a most successful day.
Only employees and their families were allowed to attend the Open Day, so it was not open to retired employees. Those who attended were taken from Car Park 5 on a route through the factory and given a ticket for a free drink and a snack, and another for a free ice cream. There was a display of vintage vehicles between the Product Centre and the North Office, a display in the Forum of a selection of engines from a Leopard through to a modern hybrid engine and a display of current machines in the car park where the 5 story block used to be.
The Vintage vehicle display
9 stands were also set up on the car park between Franks and the Machines display, including the Company Charity partners, a stand showcasing the work the company does on sustainability and environmental awareness, another about mental health support, an HR stand and a stand where people could try their skills at assembling a fuel filter!
As far as we were concerned the Long Service Club stand (nearest to No 4 Gate) was the most important one!
A 36 sq.m gazebo with tables and chairs had been provided by the Company for us. To promote the Club we had purchased two impressive stand-alone roller banners, and had a number of flyers printed, along with membership application forms. Garth Perry, Anna Errico and Beverley Spridgeon set up the stand in the morning, and were joined by Adrian Talbot and Bob Gregory-Smith in the afternoon. About 4000 people attended in two sessions; 9.00am - noon, and 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm.
It was soon clear that many were ignorant that the length of service required to join the Club was now just 15 years, as a lot of those who came to the stand thought that the service requirement was still 25 years, and some even thought it was 30 years! Sadly some did not even know the Club existed!
35 new members signed up at the event, while others took the information and application forms away to look at later. The number who signed up represents a fantastic result, and shows that there is a large untapped pool of employees we can recruit from.
We have decided that the Club will have a stand several times a year in Franks to advertise its presence and recruit new members. We are also conscious that many of our activities and outings are not attractive to younger members still in employment, either because of the nature of the events, or because they are held during working hours, so the Club will be getting input from working members to widen our range of activities to suit all members for our 2023 programme.
