Continuous Steps On Finding Solution For African Union’s Conflict Management
With a theme of revamping the Peace Support Operation (PSO) of African Union, the countries inside the African Union discuss the future of the conflict management within the countries. This understanding implies that to revamp the ways of operating conflict management, African Union countries must find ways to further have much more effective movements from each sub-organizations. Hence, some countries have suggested a few solutions to support better conflict management in African Union.
Some movements are highlighted in these committee sessions, such as implying one currency for all African Union countries, the importance of hybrid courts, and the role of RECs in this issue. The unmoderated caucus revealed a debate between countries on the importance of these suggestions.
The suggestion of having one currency brought attention to many countries as the delegate of South Africa believes that applying one currency is not yet to be applied in Africa since it might cause hyperinflation. On the other hand, the delegate of Chad stated that establishing one currency should not be applied throughout Africa within the same time. However, the establishment should be implemented one at the time to which it will encompass the whole Africa.
Hybrid court was a heated topic for many countries with the debate from delegates of Niger, that it is more politically correct and realistically applicable to do this within its own countries. Delegates of CAR tackled that by mentioning how hybrid courts will only be applied according to African Union provisions in regards to certain matters like SEA.
Furthermore, the role of RECs is also discussed. From an interview with the delegate of Chad, a definitive guideline of non-interference between REC member states when it comes to conflict intervention is needed. In an exclusive interview with the delegate of Mali, they also shared on developing local headquarters for ASF branches operating in respective RECs for better effectiveness and their agreement of a consensus in the form of MoU.
The committee session ended with a hanging situation.
