What is the Skeletal System?
All of your bones together make up your skeletal system. Your skeleton supports your body. It gives your body shape. It helps your body stand and move. It also protects parts inside your body.
Parts of the Skeletal System
The skeleton is made of bones. Bones are hard on the outside. They are strong. Bones have hollow spaces inside. The hollow spaces make bones light. Bones meet at joints. Most joints let bones move.
How Does the Skeletal System Work?
To move your body, you use many bones at the same time. Bones in the leg move the body forward. The knee joint allows the leg to bend. Foot bones turn at the ankle joint.
Working Together
Bones are connected to each other and to muscles. Bones and muscles work together to help the body stand and move. Strong cords called tendons connect muscles to bones. Muscles move bones into action.
Did You Know?
Bones have two parts. The outside of a bone is made of hard calcium and other minerals. The inside layers are soft, like a sponge. These layers make blood. They also store water and minerals.
