The nervous system controls your body. It is your body's message system. It helps you think, speak, and learn. The nervous system tells you when something is hot. It also tells your muscles when to move.

The brain, spinal cord, and nerves make up the nervous system. The spinal cord is a group of nerves in your back. Nerves branch out from the brain and the spinal cord.
How Does the Nervous System Work?
The nervous system carries messages called signals. Many signals start in the brain. The signals travel quickly from the brain to other parts of the body. Signals also travel through the spinal cord to the brain.
Working Together
The nervous system sends signals all the time. It keeps all of your body parts working. It tells your heart to beat and your eyes to blink. It also tells your stomach to digest food.
