What is the Endocrine System?
Organs called glands make up the endocrine system. These glands make chemicals called hormones. Hormones help you grow and feel good. They also help your body deal with stress.
Parts of the Endocrine System
Endocrine system glands are found in your brain, neck, and near your stomach. The different parts of the endocrine system make hormones such as adrenaline and insulin for your body.
How Does the Endocrine System Work?
Hormones give messages to body cells called target sites. Blood helps hormones travel to where they need to go. Target sites pick up certain hormones. Hormones then tell body parts and cells what to do.
Working Together
The endocrine system works with the circulatory system to deliver hormones. Your heart pumps blood through your bloodstream. Glands send hormones into your blood. Hormones reach all parts of the body through the blood.
Did You Know?
The endocrine system needs to make just the right amount of each hormone. Too little or too much of a hormone can make you sick. At least 30 hormones are flowing through your body at any time.
