Stifel, Susan

I am thrilled to be starting my 10th year of teaching at NCC. I have taught special education courses both on campus and online, and have worked concurrently as the Asst. Coordinator for Building Inclusive Child Care. Since 2010, I have served as an early intervention specialist for Via of the Lehigh Valley. I spent the 2006-2007 school year teaching NCC online courses from Madagascar and, most recently, did the same from Ethiopia in 2011-2012. Born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, I completed my B.A. (Drama) and B.Ed. (Primary-Junior) at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Following several years of international school teaching in Switzerland, Madagascar and Thailand, I completed my M.Ed. in Special Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. After marrying my husband, David, I taught students with severe disabilities for several years in Ithaca, NY.

I am fortunate that my husband’s work as a development economist allows me to continue living and teaching overseas every few years. Along with our two children, William, 14, and Lizzie, 11, we enjoy the adventures and challenges of living in different parts of the world. When not at school, I enjoy napping, eating chocolate, reading, and playing UNO and Farkle. I am a reluctant hiker and only do so to keep up with my outdoor adventure-loving family. I’m much happier walking on asphalt at an outlet shopping center. One joy of mine over this past year in Ethiopia was following, via very slow internet, my long-suffering Detroit Lions as they won a few games and finally made the playoffs! I look forward to meeting many new NCC students in the coming semesters and sharing my passion for teaching and learning.
