You, the learner, are my passion! Welcome to Northampton Community College, an exciting and dynamic learning environment that will both challenge and reward you. My name is Dr. Carolyn McKeon (Dr. C. as given to me by former learners) and we at NCC are honored that you have decided to continue your educational journey with us. These are exciting times in the world of post-secondary education with eSchools leading the way.
My success in the field of education is due to these new and innovative ways of learning. I received my degree from Capella University in May of 2007. My entire PhD was done online as a non-traditional learner. I needed this kind of setting because I am first and foremost a homeschooling mother of four boys. In order to fulfill my dream of earning my doctorate while staying home to educate my children in an individualized setting, I needed a program that met my needs; online learning was a perfect fit. I earned my PhD in education with a specialization in K-12 Teaching and Learning. I also hold an M.S. from Duquesne University in Reading and Language Arts and a B.S. from SUNY Cortland as a Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Impaired. I have worked as a reading instructor for The Duquesne Reading Clinic in Pittsburgh, PA and started a private school in PA in 2009. We have 120 students. Lastly, in August 2012, I earned a second MS. Ed. in Instruction Design and Technology.
I have been married for almost 19 years to a college professor and have homeschooled for 13 years. My family has lived in the small town of Trout Run, PA for 7 years where my husband is also a Lieutenant and the President in the volunteer fire company. We have 5 dogs (2 pugs, 1 basset hound, 1 English bulldog, and a black lab), and for the cat lovers, we have 1 Siamese cat as well. We are a very busy family.
I am currently an adjunct instructor member here at NCC as well as Kaplan University and Rasmussen College. I have been teaching online early childhood classes for 5 years (2 at NCC). I love teaching online and I am dedicated to helping you, the learner, be successful as you reach for your dreams.
My advice to you as a new learner is find support in the facilitators and your fellow learners. The faculty members here at NCC are dedicated to the adult learner, and many have been down the same road as you. Most of the time, we understand what you are going through and if we do not we do our best to walk along side you, as will your fellow learners. Reach out, ask for help, and be willing to give help when you can. I wish for you the very best at NCC as you reach for the stars. I believe education is the cornerstone to empowerment! You are all taking an important first step to empowerment with your enrollment in at Northampton Community College.
