A Great Companion - Xin-Yang Saoirse Chen (Torrey Pines Elementary School, 3rd Grade)
Cats have glistening eyes that glow in the dark. Their eyes look like exquisite emeralds, shining
mysteriously from far away. Have you ever heard the saying “Cats have nine lives”? They don’t actually
have “nine lives”; it just means that they always land on their feet, no matter how high they pounce.
Cats have fur that is delicately soft, and they are so adorable!
A long time ago, cats weren’t kept as pets like in modern times. Instead, they were wild
creatures. People farmed at that time, but pests crept by silently and ate their crops. Cats would go near
and chase away the annoying animals. Humans realized that this was really helpful.
Later on, cats became signs of bad luck because people believed they were part of witchcraft. I
know this was unfair because, without cats to catch rodents, dangerous diseases spread across the
world, such as “The Black Plague.”
Cats were kept as pets for their ability to scare away rats and mice after some years. Now in
modern times, though, cats aren’t just for shooing away pests; they have become great companions for
people. The relationship between cats and humans becomes similar to the bond between dogs and
humans. If my family had a cat, I'm sure it would bring us lots of joy, calmness, and love!
I believe that cats and people will turn out to be much more than a family in the future because
of the great bond they form now. Cats gift people lots of positive emotions, and they are excellent pets.
