Windows to the Soul - Seoyun Chong (Archbishop Mitty High School, Ninth Grade)
I feel like windows,
Peering into me.
Windows I can’t block,
Windows I can’t see.
They’re doors that you
Don’t need to knock.
I feel like a demonstration,
A presentation for those like me.
They point and say,
"Don’t be like this,"
When all I want is someone to see
That I’m just me.
The windows around me are covered in black.
The light won’t shine through,
I can’t see, don’t know if it’s true.
I thought it was hopeless,
In a dream where I’m throneless.
My thrones have cracked open,
My gold has been stolen.
All that’s left for me,
Are things that aren’t free.
Our souls have windows,
For everyone to see.
But once in a while,
It’s okay to smile,
It’s okay to cry,
It’s okay to shout.
Our windows aren’t bulletproof,
Neither are our hearts.
Our souls have windows,
But we’re not exhibitions.
We’re not presentations for those like us.
The windows connect us,
The windows reveal us,
To those who want to know us.
