In the Stillness - Nishka Bijumalla (Oswego East High School, Twelfth Grade)
Time, why do you run so fast?
I wish you would slow down,
like a leaf drifting gently,
caught in a slight breeze,
taking its time to settle on the ground.
I want to follow the hands of a clock,
steadily making their way around,
the second-hand dancing
a quiet, unhurried waltz.
But in that stillness,
there’s something beautiful.
I want to watch a cake rise,
the edges turning golden,
time moving like the soft rise of batter,
unhurried, as if nothing else matters.
I want to sit in the stillness,
like a cocoon hanging in the quiet,
waiting,
as nature works its magic slowly.
And what was once unmoving and hidden
transforms into something beautiful and new.
Let me stay in that peace,
until the rush fades away,
and I am left with nothing but time.
