2.7.23
Hello 5th/6th Grade BHA Families,
What an amazing day filled with inventive bridge building, a tour of the Alamo, and a viewing of the 1939 version of Disney's "The Ugly Duckling." There was lots of laughter today and some tears may have been shed (poor Ugly Duckling!) My hope is that the day was also filled with loads of learning and fun.
Please see below for this week's BHA Announcements, including Calendar Updates and Field Trip RSVPs. And don't forget to scroll to the very end for this week's Printable Homework link. As a reminder, due to a change in my Tuesday afternoon schedule, this will be my schedule for publishing information on this page until further notice. I will have announcements and homework done as quickly as possible, and then will update with more detail either later in the evening or Wednesday morning.
I also wanted to share that next week I will reserve 30 mintues during IEW for our Class Valentine's Day Party. Students are encouraged to bring nut-free snacks to share, I will provide the paper plates and napkins. Students may also bring Valentine's to pass out to their classmates. I was asked to provide a list of Student names, which you can find here.
Feel free to reach out to me with any questions!
Blessings,
Mrs. AyalaHA FYI

We went right into the Unit 1 Communications Table Quizzes. Students took the quiz closed-book for the first 10min, and then were given 5min to look at their notes to finish the quiz. They also completed a Computer Architecture worksheet as part of the quiz.
We kicked off Unit 2 Transportation with a conversation about the different modes of transportation and which interest them most.
We reviewed Lesson 8, Steam Engine, where Addison shared her report on the mining industry, due to the steam engine. Well done, Addison!
We reviewed Lesson 9, Trains, which included a dynamic hands on project where the Students were challenged to work in Table Groups to build a bridge using limited supplies including poster board, tape, craft sticks, pipe cleaners, and rubber bands. Only 1 group was able to finish before the end of the class. Since all the groups were excited about their projects, choosing to skip recess so they could continue working on the bridges, we spend the first 15min of American History finishing up the projects. Please see the pictures below of their innovative work!

After completing the bridge projects, we said the Pledge of Allegiance and then continued our devotion on the Armor of God, focusing on the Breastplate of Righteousness and this verse from Isaiah 61:10, "I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness." We talked about the righteousness we are able to wear because of Jesus' death on the cross and resurrection.
Reviewed Chapter 20 The Lone Star Republic which included a video tour of the Alamo. We then placed a quiz game reviewing chapters 19-20. Congratulations to "The Alamos" for taking the win today!

Began classing by sharing two excellent Hans Christain Andersen compositions written by Zoe and Lily. Fantastic work, Ladies!
I then had a few students share their Ugly Duckling KWOs and we began Lesson 17. This week the Students will write a 3 paragraph composition from their KWO from Pictures.
We thorougly reviewed the checklist on p. 125 to ensure full understanding. I explained that some Students are still failing to do the items on the checklist, which means they are not getting credit for their work. I asked these Students to resubmit past work.
We reviewed this week's vocabulary, and then watched a Disney rendition of "The Ugly Duckling" from the 1930s. Ask your Student what they thought about this (almost silent) movie!
The Class helped me clean up, since we had lots of left over messes from the bridge project, and then we gathered in a circle to pray. Ethan opend the prayer and then I followed up, praying specifically over each request written by the Students.
See you next week!
This week you will write a story using the KWO that you created last week. For this lesson you will write three paragraphs. Each paragraph will contain 6 dress-ups. The Style Practice you completed in the last lesson should give you ideas.
Using your KWO on p. 118, begin writing your first paragraph. Follow the checklist on p. 125. When you reach the end of the KWO, create a clincher sentence that repeats or reflects two or three key words of the central fact placed by Roman numeral I.
Now write the second paragraph of your tale using your KWO on p. 118. Follow the checklist on p. 125. When you reach the end of the KWO, create a clincher sentence that repeats or reflects two or three key words of the central fact placed by Roman numeral II.
Now write the third paragraph of your tale using your KWO on p. 118. Follow the checklist on p. 125. When you reach the end of the KWO, create a clincher sentence that repeats or reflects two or three key words of the central fact placed by Roman numeral III.
Lastly, use one to three key words from the final sentence of the third paragraph to create a catchy title. Follow the title rule.
Check off each item on the checklist as you complete it. Underline six dress-ups in each paragraph as required on the checklist. Each paragraph should begin with the central fact and end with a clincher that repeats or reflects two or three key words of the central fact. Highlight or bold the repeated or reflected words.
Turn in your rough draft to your editor with the completed checklist attached.
When your edit hands back your rough draft, make the needed changes.
Paperclip or staple together three-hole punch the checklist, final draft, rough draft, and KWO. Bring to class next week for credit.
Next week we will have a Valentine’s Day party during the last 30 minutes of class. Feel free to bring nut-free snacks you can share as well as Valentine’s to pass out to your classmates (we have 19 Students)
Prepare for next week’s lesson, Tiger Tamer, by looking at the pictures on p. 129. Think about the pictures by answering some of the Brain-Helping questions on the right.
