12.6.22
Hello 5th/6th Grade BHA Families,
I can hardly believe it but we are just one week away from Christmas break. I feel like it was just the other day when we all met at Orientation, yet here we are... 19 days from Christmas. To celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ I have reserved class time next week for some socialization which will include a movie, games, tasty treats, a gift exchange, and a private viewing of the Christmas Performance. I will provide the holiday movie! If your Student has a favorite board game, they are welcomed to bring to class next week. Please also make sure your Students bring a food (no nuts) or drink item to share. I will provide paper plates and napkins. Lastly, everyone asked to take part in a "Secret Santa" gift exchange next week, value $20. Please have your Student bring in a wrapped gift with only the recipient name on the gift. Identities will be revealed at the end of class! Please, please don't forget the gift.... I would hate for a Student to leave class empty-handed next week. Thank you so much!
Also, next week, instead of our usual IEW class, all Students will be dismissed to the Sanctuary at 11:15 for a our final Spirit Rally of the year (Pajama Day!) as well as a private viewing (Students only) of this year's Christmas performance.
I pray you are all enjoying this Christmas season and find yourself winding down from the holiday hustle & bustle to truly enjoy the gift of His presence (Exodus 33:14; Psalm 95:2).
Blessings,
Mrs. Ayala

Today was our 2nd week in our month long devotional series on Advent which included lighting the second candle of Advent, the candle of Peace. We studied Philippians 4:4-9, highlighting v. 7, "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your heats and minds in Christ Jesus." We had a good discussion on what it means to have peace and how we can get this divine peace in our lives, a peace that is beyond human understanding. I asked the Students to journal this week on ways they could have more peace in their lives this Christmas season... what anxieties & concerns can they cast onto the Lord? I opened the class in prayer.
We reviewed Unit 30 Pendulums, which included a video & study of the Metronome.
Students spent 5min studying and then did a Table Quiz. I will award the highest scoring table next week.
Reviewed Units 31 and 32, as we kick off the final unit in our Fall Semester Study of Machines & Motion. We did a fun project where Students were asked to use toothpicks to build a structure of blocks and legos. This was a demonstration of how difficult it was to build in ancient times before the invention of modern machines. We also watched a vide of an eagle turning itself into a wedge to capture a fish.
Reviewed homework which included an announcement that Science Projects are now due JANUARY 17 instead of January 10. This will ensure you are not completely focusing your final days of Christmas break to complete the project.
Jackson C. kindly closed us in prayer. Thank you, Jackson.
Collected last week's homework and reviewed this week's homework. Dismissed class for our 10min recess.

As a reminder, homework is not mandatory. These homework assignments are provided for those families who wish to use these Branches classes as COMPLETE curriculum. The "Recommended" assignments are also very helpful for understanding and participation during class time. The "Additional Assignments for Further Understanding" are for anyone who wants to explore the subjects further.
We started class with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a recap of today's Advent devotion on PEACE.
We went right into our final Fall Project State presentations. Well done, Everyone! I enjoyed listening to everyone share their knowledge and passion for their State of choice. Grades will be finalized when we return from break.. For those Students who's project I did not take home, PLEASE store in a safe place so that you can bring them back for Open House in May. THANK YOU!
We discussed the bible verses on Self-Control which was assigned for homework a few weeks back. We discussed how the colonists were growing more anxious for independence from England, however as the cry for freedom mounted, there was widespread recognition that in order to be free and independent from England, colonists needed to exercise self-control.
We then began to watch a video entitled "Would You Have Joined the American Revolution?" which asks the Student to consider themselves living in a pre-United States 1775 era, maybe even a different people group. This was the start of their homework (see below). Next week we will debate this question!
Mia beautifully closed us in prayer. Thank you, Mia!
Dismissed class for a 10min Recess.
Read Chapter 14, John Paul Jones, the Naval Hero, pp. 87-92
Answer in complete sentences, Chapter 14 Review Questions on p. 92. Bring to class for credit.
It is easy to assume that if you lived at the time of the American Revolution, you would have picked the colonies’ side. Watch the following video (stop at 9:17) to see the other options that may have been open to you: “Would You Have Joined the American Revolution?” Be prepared to defend multiple options, depending on who you would have been in a pre-United States 1775 era, in our first in class DEBATE next week! Use this worksheet to organize the different arguments per people group.

3 Students read their Neverland example, while fellow Students listened for dress-ups, decorations, and vocabulary.
Started Lesson 12, Swans. Read the story, watched a video on swans, and then discussed it.
We also began the KWO and quickly reviewed our new dress-up, the quality adjective.
Reviewed homework and then we gathered in a circle to pray over this week's prayer requests. I am thankful that your Students would open their hearts to me by submitting their prayers and requests.
Dismissed the class.
If you didn’t finish in class, complete the KWO on p. 89
Using the KWO, tell the facts back to someone. If the note is unclear, fix it. For the clincher, repeat or reflect the words on the topic line.
Complete the Style Practice exercises on pp. 91-92
Cut out the Vocabulary Words for Lesson 12 and place in your vocabulary baggie: majestic, graceful. Learn their meanings and complete the Vocabulary Practice on p. 92.
Using your KWO and your style practice work, begin writing one paragraph (4-5 sentences) about swans. Follow the checklist on p. 93. When you reach the end of your KWO, create a clincher sentence that repeats or reflects the key words placed on the topic line beside the Roman numeral.
Complete Day 3, p. 88
Finish writing your 1-paragraph report
Check off each item on the checklist as you complete it. Underline the dress-ups that are required on the checklist. Highlight or bold 2 or 3 key words that repeat or reflect in the topic and clincher sentences. Create a catchy title.
Turn in your rough draft to your editor (ie parent / homeschool teacher) with the completed checklist attached
Complete Day 4, p. 82
When your editor hands back your rough draft, make the needed changes.
Paperclip or staple the checklist, final draft, rough draft, and KWO together
3-hole punch your packet of work and bring to class next week for credit
