Hello 5th/6th Grade BHA Families,
What a fabulous Valentine's Day we shared today. I hope your Students all agree! We had an amazing discussion on the future of automobiles, discussed Abraham Lincoln's favorite poem, made nostalgic Civil War Dolls, and then listened to the beautiful hymn, "My Jesus, I Love Thee" while making our own unique Valentine's Conversation Hearts, focusing on who the Lord is to each of us. We ended the day with a lovely celebration, sharing snacks and Valentine's. I think today may have been one of my most favorite days this year, especially with the Teamwork that took place at the end resulting in an on-time dismissal (a very rare occurence after having a holiday party!) I'm so thankful for everyone's willingness to pitch in with the clean-up duties!
I am also very thankful for your generousity. I was showered with sweet Valentine's Gifts today. You all have made me feel truly blessed & loved. I hope you all know how much your thoughtful gestures mean to me!
Lastly, next week is CAREER DAY! Please make sure your Student comes dressed in their career of choice!!! It's going to be a fun day filled with inspiring Guest Speakers. That being said, I'm not sure how much time we'll spend in the classroom, honestly, it looks like we'll have very little time to tackle the syllabus, but I hope you agree that it'll be worth missing a day of lessons to glean words of wisdom from various Christ-centered individuals ranging from Law Enforcement to innovative Entrepreneurs to Legal Professionals.
Oh, and let's not forget that next week we also kick off our annual Read-A-Thon. This year's theme is "Keep The Doors Open." We are raising funds for the 2023-2024 Rent. As you know, everything is more expensive. The funds raised will be a huge help to keep our amazing homeschool academy alive and thriving!
Feel free to reach out to me with any questions. And please scroll to the very bottom to peruse all of the fun photos from today! Happy Valentine's Day!
Blessings,

Opened class with the Pledge of Allegience as well as this week's devotion. We continued our study on the Armor of God, reading Ephesians 6:10-20 and then focusing on the Sandals of Peace. We read and discussed Isaiah 52:7, "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation." I challenged the Students to step out in boldness this week and share the Good News with at least one person!
Passed out grades for the Fall Project. Maximum score was 20. Scores ranged from 17-20. Well done, Students!
We reviewed Chapter 21, The War Between States, before doing a study on Abraham Lincoln which included reading his favortite poem by William Knox, "Mortality." We discussed it's meaning by having Students share which verse spoke to them and why. For homework Students are to write a brief summary of this on the back of the Abraham Lincoln picture and color it as well. Please return back to class. I will have them on display at Open House.
We then created Civil War Dolls using vintage handkerchiefs, string, and cotton stuffing. During the Civil War, there was little money to be found for food, let alone toys, so women made dolls for the children out of handkerchiefs. If the handkerchief had belonged to a loved one who had gone off to war, the doll helped to ease the pain of separation. Also known as church dolls, they provided a quiet toy for a child's amusement, and were silent if dropped. Ask your Student to show you the sweet Church / Civil War Handkerchief Dolls they made today!
Sang the Birthday Cheer to two Students both celebrating this week, Andrew and Jordyn! I also gave them a birthday card and treat, and they picked out a gift from the Birthday Box! Happy Birthday, Andrew and Jordyn!
I reviewed homework as well as collected this week's homework.
If you didn't finish in class, complete the study on Abraham Lincoln which included reading his favortite poem by William Knox, "Mortality." Write a brief summary of the verses that stood out to you and why on the back of the Abraham Lincoln picture . Color this picture as well. Bring to class next week. I will collect them to display at Open House. Don't forget to write your name!
