10.11.22
Hello 5th/6th Grade BHA Families,
It was so nice to be back! Each week I am amazed by how enthusiastic and interactive the Students all are. Today we had some fun in Science taking measurements of a bicycle's pedals, axles, and chains and then discussing it's mechanical advantages. Later, in American History, the Students had an opportunity to put their knowledge of the Northeast Region to the test! And lastly we spent a lot of time discussing our newest writing structure in IEW, the Story Sequence Chart. We covered a lot today, and, as usual, the day really flew by.
Please see below for more detail on BHA Announcements as well as what we did in each class period. Don't forget to scroll to the bottom for your Printable Homework link.
Have an amazing week!
Blessings,
Mrs. Ayala

We started class with some quick catch up. The Students were excited to hear about my trip and I enjoyed sharing some of the details with them. Sebastien then eagerly opened the class in prayer.
I passed back some of the homework I was able to credit. Please discuss with your Student what you would like them to do with the homework they receive back each week. Many had questions about this!
Our devotional today was on Matthew 11:28-30, with our highlight verse being, "For my yoke is easy and my burden is light," Matthew 11:30. We talked about the hardest job or chore they've ever done, and then discussed these verses and how Jesus wants us to cast our burdens onto Him for His yoke is easy. I asked the Students what burden they are carrying that Jesus could help carry for them. They wrote this question in their bible journal so they could ponder it this week.
I walked around and credited everyone who did this week's vocabulary homework.
We reviewed & discussed Lesson 14 by watching a video, answering the homework questions, and taking measurements of a bike and it's pedal, chains, axles, and wheels. We then discussed it's mechanical advantages. Also, while one group was taking the measurements, the other groups were writing notes of thanks to Paster Jon from Foothill Vineyard Church in honor of Pastor Appreciation Weeek. I will mail the Thank You card from our class this week!
Watched a video and reviewed the homework questions for Lesson 15 on Gears.
Each Student got an oppotunity to share their Gears or Levers Show & Tell item. This was fun to hear from each of them.
We ran out of time, so we were not able to review Lesson 16 on Pulleys.
Collected last week's homework and reviewed this week's homework. Dismissed class for our 10min recess.

We started class with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a recap of today's devotion on Matthew 11:30. Thank you, Addison, for being so willing to summarize our devotion. ASB also stopped in to share some news including an announcement of our Wreath Fundraiser which kicks off today!
Bea-Loren beautifully opened the class in prayer.

Reviewed Chapter 6 homework questions and then watched a video on the Northeast Region.

I shared School Announcements, Addison highlighted our devotional for today, and then we jumped right into today's lesson.
Began with Sophia and Ethan each reading their "The Mule & The Buyer" stories from last week, while classmates wrote dress-ups that they heard on the board. They did a great job here.
Introduced the NEW writing structure, Story Sequence Chart, and spent a lot of time on this, since this is a departure fom how we have been writing KWO's and paragraphs previously. If this is your first time with IEW, please watch this video to get a better understanding so you can help your Student. Again, this is quite different from all that we have learned so far! Your Student may need some additional help from you on this.
We discussed the familiar story of "Cinderella" and applied the Story Sequence Chart to create a KWO for this. I did this as needed practice.
We read the first few pages of this new lesson, including the story of "Theseus and the Minotaur". We also watched a short video on this myth and discussed it's meaning. Please ask them about this!
Reviewed this week's vocabulary words, Labyrinth and youths, as well as the homework for this week.
Addison lovingly closed the class in prayer.
I collected their homework and dismissed the class for the week!
Using the Story Sequence Chart questions, write a KWO of the myth "Theseus and the Minotaur" on p. 47
Complete Day 2, p. 43
Complete Style Practice on page 48
Cut out vocabulary cards Labyrinth, youths. Discuss their meanings and complete vocabulary practice on p. 49
Use the KWO, tell the first paragraph of the myth back to someone. If a note is unclear, fix it before you write your myth.
Review the checklist before you begin writing your paragraph. Notice you will not create a title for this myth until you finish the story next week.
Using your KWO, begin writing the first paragraph of your myth. Dress-up your writing by adding an -ly adverb and a who/which clause.
Complete Day 3, p. 45
Finish writing the first paragraph of your myth. Remember to underline the -ly adverb and the first word of the who/which clause (the word who or which)
Check off each item on the checklist as you complete it.
Turn in your rough draft to your editor (ie parent / homeschool teacher) with the completed checklist attached
Complete Day 4, p. 46
When your editor hands back your rough draft, make the needed changes
Paperclip the checklist, final draft, rough draft, and KWO together
3-hole punch (required) your packet of work and bring to class next week for credit.
Copy the Story Sequence Chart found on p. 45 on a separate piece of paper. Bring to class next week for extra credit.
What is your favorite movie? Answer these questions about your favorite movie and bring to class next week for credit;
