Salvē! This open-access textbook supplement to Wheelock's Latin textbook offers materials that supplement the content provided in Wheelock's Latin, 7th edition, but can be used by instructors and students in a variety of contexts within and beyond the language classroom. This supplement is meant to provide additional ways of accessing, engaging with, and teaching Latin for students (and instructors) who may benefit from a blended pedagogical model, rather than a strict grammar-translation approach.

This open-access resource is free to use and is licensed under a Creative Commons license that encourages users to reuse, remix, adapt, or build on the materials provided here, as long as they do so with attribution and for non-commercial purposes. 

This textbook is written as a supplement to Wheelock's Latin, 7th edition and follows Wheelock's arrangement of grammatical content and vocabulary. However, it is possible to use the materials contained in this book independent of Wheelock.

This book contains two sections: Supplemental Exercises & Readings and Special Topic Modules. These two sections can be used in conjunction or independently. 

Supplemental Exercises & Readings

This section contains additional exempla, exercises, and readings, corresponding to the grammatical material in Wheelock's Latin. For the purposes of this supplement, Wheelock's Latin has been divided into two parts, each of which contains three units. Each unit is divided into smaller mini-units, comprised of single chapters or pairs of chapters. Supplementary material is grouped according to these mini-units.

Each supplement page usually contains three elements:

1. Additional exempla, often with sets of minimal-contrast sentences;

2. Composition exercises, which include prompts to rewrite exempla and to complete sentences in a Latin paragraph;

3. A lectio, a brief reading usually comprised of a paragraph of a longer narrative that changes with each unit.

Special Topic Modules

The special topic modules, which focus on aspects of ancient life that standard Latin textbooks often overlook, are intended to provide a more comprehensive view of the diversity of the ancient world and its study. In these modules, experts share an aspect of their research via a brief video, along with a selected bibliography and a set of Latin vocabulary words relevant to the topic at hand. This additional vocabulary can be used in completing composition exercises, to integrate the acquisition of knowledge about this special topic into students' understanding of Latin grammar.

Additional materials, including additional 'bonus' readings and special topic modules, will be added regularly after initial publication in August 2024. Summaries of these updates will be posted below.
