Introduction.

There is a problem in some Christian Bible translations of the Hebrew of the word “an anointed” prince in Daniel 9:25.

Daniel 9:25 is about an anointed prince King Cyrus the King of Persia.

Most Christian Bibles translate the word “anointed” in Isaiah 45:1 which is King Cyrus correctly as “anointed” but this same word “anointed” in Daniel 9:25 is translated in some Christian Bibles as “Messiah” and made a capital letter however this is the same word “anointed” without a capital letter which most Christian Bibles correctly translate in Isaiah 45:1 which is King Cyrus.

The wrong translation of Daniel 9:25 in some Christian Bibles makes it look like Jesus when it is read by Christians.

However when read in the Tanakh Jewish Scripture in Hebrew the word “anointed” in Daniel 9:25 is referring to an anointed prince King Cyrus the King of Persia who would free the children of Israel from Babylon and allow them to return to Jerusalem and build the second Temple.

Daniel 9:26 is not about Jesus because an anointed one is "cut off" from the mercy of God meaning he is punished for disobedience to God as explained in 4 below "and will be no more" however in all four Gospels Jesus returned after 3 days meaning Daniel 9:26 is not describing Jesus.

1. Daniel tries to understand the prophecy in Jeremiah.

Tanakh Jewish Bible Jeremiah 25:1 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah-that is the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.

Note 1. Jerusalem comes under the subjugation of Babylon in AM 3320 Hebrew calendar year and the people of Jerusalem pay taxes to Babylon.

Jeremiah 25:11 And all this land shall become waste desolation, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon for seventy years.

Note 1. Prophecy that the people will serve the King of Babylon for 70 years.

Note 2. Jerusalem and the first temple are destroyed by the King of Babylon in AM 3338 Hebrew calendar year and the children of Israel are exiled to Babylon.

A. In 70 years the Babylonian Empire will end in Jeremiah 25:12.

In 70 years the Babylonian Empire will end is not called a word prophecy in Jeremiah 25:12.

In Jeremiah 25:12 the fall of the Babylonian Empire is in 70 years starting from the rise of King Nebuchadnezzar and ending when Cyrus of Persia becomes king.

1. King Nebuchadnezzar came to power 19 years before the destruction of the first temple.

2. In the next year 18 years before the destruction of the first temple King Nebuchadnezzar subjugated Jerusalem.

3. When the Babylonian Empire ended fulfilling Jeremiah 25:12 Daniel lived in the first year of Darius the Mede who came to power 50 years after the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and ruled for a short time before King Cyrus.

Jeremiah 25:12 And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are completed, that I will punish the king of Babylon (King Nebuchadnezzar), and that nation, said the LORD, for their wrong doing, and the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it be everlasting desolations (the end of the Babylonian Empire).

Note 1. The 70 year prophecy in Jeremiah 25:12.

Daniel in Babylon is trying to understand the prophecy in Jeremiah 25:12 and Jeremiah 29:10 thinking that the 70 years that are mentioned in both are the same however Angel Gabriel gives Daniel knowledge to understand they are not the same and shows Daniel how to calculate the beginning of each 70 year period.

Note 2. King Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon subjugated Jerusalem in AM 3320 Hebrew calendar year when Jerusalem gave tax to Babylon.

Note 3. This 70 year period starts from the year of the subjugation of Jerusalem so this 70 year period is from AM 3320 - AM 3391 Hebrew calendar dates.

Note 4. The rule of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon ended in AM 3391 Hebrew calendar date which is 70 years after the subjugation of Jerusalem when Jerusalem gave tax to Babylon from AM 3320.

B. In 70 years exiles in Babylon can return to Jerusalem is called a word prophecy in Jeremiah 29:10.

Angel Gabriel reveals to Daniel that the return of the Jews to Jerusalem in 70 years in the word prophecy in Jeremiah 29:10 means 70 years after the destruction of Jerusalem in Daniel 9:2. The prophecy ends at the building of the second temple in Jerusalem when Jewish exiles return from Babylon.

1. Daniel living in the first year of Darius the Mede saw that Jeremiah 29:10 looked similar to Jeremiah 25:12.

2. However Jeremiah 29:10 says “word” meaning a word prophecy foretelling the return of the Jewish exiles to Jerusalem and this 70 year period starts from the time the first temple and Jerusalem is destroyed as explained by angel Gabriel to Daniel in Daniel 9:2.

3. Ezra 1:1 mentions the word prophecy and Ezra 1:1 - 1:3 shows that Jeremiah 29:10 ends and is fulfilled in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia.

Ezra 1:1 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah (in Jeremiah 29:10) might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying:

Ezra 1:2 Thus said Cyrus king of Persia: All the kingdoms of the earth has the LORD, the God of heaven, given me; and He has charged me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

Ezra 1:3 Whosoever there is among you of all His people, his God be with him, let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD, the God of Israel, He is the God Who is in Jerusalem.

Jeremiah 29:10 For thus said the LORD: After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will remember you (the children of Israel) and I will fulfill My good word (meaning word prophecy) towards you causing you to return to this place (Jerusalem).”

Note 1. The 70 year prophecy in Jeremiah 29:10.

Note 2. King Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon destroyed Jerusalem and the first temple in AM 3338 Hebrew calendar year.

Note 3. This 70 year period starts from the year of the destruction of Jerusalem and the first temple so this 70 year period is from AM 3338 - AM 3408 Hebrew calendar dates.

Note 4. The building of the second temple started in AM 3408 Hebrew calendar date which is 70 years after the destruction of Jerusalem and the first temple in AM 3338 Hebrew calendar date. (Daniel 9:2 “ .. I thought about the calculations … since the destruction of Jerusalem”).

C. In 70 years exiles in Babylon can return to Jerusalem is a word prophecy in Jeremiah 29:10 which starts from the destruction of the first temple and Jerusalem in Daniel 9:2.

Daniel 9:2 is a summary of the verses which follow it.

1. In Daniel 9:2 the “word” meaning a word prophecy about the return of the Jews to Jerusalem after a 70 year period mentioned as the “word” of prophesy in Jeremiah 29:10 foretells the return of the Jews from Babylon to Jerusalem from the time the first temple is destroyed.

2. The angel Gabriel gives Daniel the understanding that the two 70 year periods in Jeremiah 25:12 and Jeremiah 29:10 are not the same but overlap with each other.

3. Jeremiah 25:12 about the end of the Babylonian Empire in a 70 year period starting from King Nebuchadnezzar’s subjugation of Jerusalem 18 years before the destruction of the first temple meaning this information was revealed by Prophet Jeremiah before the exile to Babylon as explained in Jeremiah 25:1.

4. In Jeremiah 29:10 is the “word” meaning a word prophecy about the return of the Jewish exiles in Babylon back to Jerusalem in a 70 year period revealed after the exile as explained in Jeremiah 29:1 and Daniel thinks these are both the same 70 year periods however after Babylon is defeated the Jews have not returned to Jerusalem meaning only part of the prophecy is fulfilled..

5. Daniel prays to God for forgiveness because he remembers Leviticus 26:18 where punishment will be increased seven times (7 times 70 years means 490 years in exile) if people continue to disobey God however angel Gabriel helps Daniel to understand that the word prophecy of 70 years for the return of the Jews to Jerusalem starts from the destruction of the first temple and Jerusalem.

Daniel 9:2 in the first year of his reign I Daniel thought about the calculations, over the number of the years, that the word (meaning word prophecy) of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet (Jeremiah 29:10 also mentions God’s word meaning God’s prophecy that the Jews will return to Jerusalem, and angel Gabriel allowed Daniel to understand to start counting), since the destruction of Jerusalem seventy years (meaning 70 years after the destruction of Jerusalem the Jews exiled in Babylon will be allowed to return to Jerusalem and this is the calculation for the 70 years mentioned in Jeremiah 29:10 which is different but overlaps the 70 years mentioned for the end of the Babylonian Empire in Jeremiah 25:12).

Leviticus 25:8 You shall count seven weeks of years, seven times seven of years, so that the time of seven weeks of years shall give you forty nine years.

One day represents 1 year.

1 week (7 days) represents 7 years.

Seven weeks (of years) = 7x7= 49 years.

Seventy weeks (of years) = 70x7= 490 years.

Note 3. The situation for the Jewish people today is described in Hosea 3:4.

When will the messiah who is mentioned in the Tanakh Jewish scripture come?

The Jewish people look forward to the arrival of the messiah because the Tanakh says that when he comes he will fear God and all the tribes of Israel will be gathered together and everyone on the Earth will recognise him and everyone on the earth will know God and there will be worldwide peace meaning the messiah described in Tanakh Jewish scripture comes on the Day of Resurrection.

1. There is no second coming of the messiah in Tanakh Jewish scripture meaning a person who fails to do all the prophecies in Tanakh is not the promised messiah.

2. There is no antichrist in Tanakh Jewish scripture because the promised messiah will be recognised by every person in the world meaning if anyone rejects him it means he is not the promised messiah.

3. The Jewish people today.

The children of Israel and Prophet Isaiah in the Southern Kingdom of Judah worshipped God in the Jerusalem Temple when the children of Israel who were living in the Northern Kingdom of Israel who worshipped the idol Baal in Samaria were warned of their exile by Prophet Hosea.

Hosea 3:4 For the children of Israel (the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel who were exiled from the Northern Kingdom of Israel and called Ephraim which is the name of their leading tribe) shall sit for many days without king (on the throne from the House of David like Judah and Ephraim today. The name Jew comes from Judah which is the leading tribe in the Southern Kingdom of Judah) and without prince (in the Jerusalem Temple from the House of Aaron like Judah and Ephraim today), and without sacrifice (like Judah and Ephraim today), and without pillar (of Baal used in Samaria in the Northern Kingdom of Israel for idol worship), and without ephod (the breastplate worn by the high priest in the Jerusalem temple containing ways of seeking the judgement of God) or teraphim (oracle idol in Samaria associated with seeking knowledge from an idol),

Hosea 6:2 After two days (after the First Temple and the Second Temple period) He (God) will revive us (the Ten Lost Tribes of the Northern Kingdom of Israel known by the name Ephraim which is their leading tribe and the Jews from the Southern Kingdom of Judah will both be gathered together in Ezekiel 37:16-22, Jeremiah 50:4, Hosea 1:9, Hosea 2:1-2 or Hosea 1:9-11 in a Christian Bible, Isaiah 11:1-13 and), on the third day (the Third Temple which is forever in Ezekiel 37:28) He (God) will raise us up (in Daniel 12:2), so that we may live in His (God’s) presence (forever).

Daniel 9:25 mentions only whole weeks meaning the missing 1 week representing 7 years has been divided into two halves or two parts to give the calculations using the Hebrew calendar).

Messiahs in the Jewish Bible.

A prophet or king or priest or judge who is smeared with oil is called an anointed person meaning messiah.

There are many Jewish and non Jewish prophets or kings or priests or judges throughout history who were anointed meaning messiahs.

Note 2. Anointed prince in the Christian Bible translation of the Hebrew Jewish Bible.

Messiahs in the Jewish Bible.

A prophet or king or priest or judge who is smeared with oil is called anointed meaning messiah.

There are many Jewish and non Jewish prophets or kings or priests or judges throughout history who were anointed meaning messiahs.

Note 2. Anointed person in the Christian Bible translation of the Hebrew Jewish Bible.

Most Christian Bibles translate the word “anointed” in the Jewish Bible Isaiah 45:1 correctly as “anointed” but this same word “anointed” in the Jewish Bible Daniel 9:26 is translated in some Christian Bibles as “Messiah” and made a capital letter however this is the same word “anointed” without a capital letter which most Christian Bibles correctly translate in Isaiah 45:1.

The best Christian Bible translation of the Hebrew word use one word without capital letters such as “anointed” in Isaiah 45:1 and Daniel 9:25 and Daniel 9:26.

Note 3. The high priest in the second temple from 67 CE-70 CE in Jerusalem.

Daniel 9:26 is about an anointed one who will be cut off meaning the last high priest of the Second Temple Phinehas Ben Samuel who was given the position of high priest during the first war against Roman occupation by Jewish Zealots who threw lots to select the high priest as a way to remove the traditional priestly families.

This appointment of the high priest in 67 CE when Jerusalem was under siege by the Roman Army caused bitterness and civil war among the Jewish people and is explained in Daniel 9:5-9:16.

Many of the people in Judea including the high priest lost the mercy of God as punishment for disobeying God as explained in Daniel 9:5-9:16.

Josephus (37 CE-100 CE a Jew who was in Jerusalem in the time of the Zealots) descended through his father from the priestly order of the Jehoiarib which was the first of the 24 orders of priests in the Temple in Jerusalem and in his reporting of first century Jewish history wrote "he (Phinehas Ben Samuel the high priest from 67 CE-70 CE) scarcely knew what the high priesthood meant," because he was a farmer who tilled the earth (Wars, 4:155).

Leviticus 25:8 You shall count seven weeks of years, seven times seven of years, so that the time of seven weeks of years shall give you forty nine years.

One day represents 1 year.

1 week (7 days) represents 7 years.

Seven weeks (of years) = 7x7= 49 years.

Sixty two weeks (of years) = 62x7= 434 years.

Note 1. If God is one then the Gospel would teach that Jesus does not know the hour.

Note 3. In the Gospel Jesus is not God because Jesus does not know the hour meaning the teaching that Jesus is God or part of God contradicts the Gospel meaning Trinity was invented after the time of Jesus and after the writing of the Gospels.

Note 4. There is only one God because no one is equal to God not Jesus and not the angels.

Note 5. Jesus is like the angels and other creations meaning Jesus is not like God.

In the Gospel Jesus is not God or part of God because Jesus does not know “the hour” because only God knows “the hour” meaning “God is one’ not three in one.

Note 1. Only God knows the hour of the Day of Resurrection but Jesus and the Holy Spirit and every other creation does not know meaning no one is equal to God which confirms God is one person not three persons in one.
