Comment 1. Can Prophet Muhammad read and write?

Quran 25:5 shows that the people of Makkah knew that Prophet Muhammad can read and write meaning the idea that Prophet Muhammad cannot read and write is not from God and not from Prophet Muhammad and not from the Quran but came from people who did not understand the meaning of lettered meaning educated in the scripture of God and unlettered meaning not educated in the scripture of God.

Comment 2. Why did God teach every messenger of God how to use the pen and how to read and write?

If the messengers of God could not read and write then they could not check what their scribes had written.

If the messengers of God could not read and write then they would not know the correct spelling of each word of God.

If the messengers of God could not read and write then they could not be held responsible for correctly conveying the message of God if their scribes made errors in their writings.

The importance of the pen is revealed by God in both the first revelation of the Quran known as Quran chapter 96 and the second revelation of the Quran known as Quran chapter 68 because God is telling Prophet Muhammad to immediately begin to write down what God is revealing to his heart (mind, brain).

God was commanding His messenger to write down with a pen with his own hand what was revealed to him.

It is the Prophet of God who is responsible to correctly convey the message of God therefore it was necessary that the Prophet be able to read and write otherwise he would not be able to check what scribes had recorded.

To convey the message of God every messenger is given the skill of reading and writing.

If God is commanding humans to use the pen as the very first and second revelations in the Quran from God then certainly God is commanding His messenger Prophet Muhammad to use the pen.

Quran 68:1 Verse 68:1 Nun. By (the truth of the existence of) the pen and (by the truth of) what they (the messengers of God, Prophet Moses Musa, Prophet David Dawud, Prophet Jesus Isa and Prophet Muhammad) write (in the Torah Taurat and the Psalms Zabur and the Gospel Injil and the Koran Quran, I God proclaim that) -

Quran 96:4 Verse 96:4 (It is God) who taught (the messengers of God, Prophet Moses Musa, Prophet David Dawud, Prophet Jesus Isa and Prophet Muhammad) how to use the pen (for writing the Torah Taurat and the Psalms Zabur and the Gospel Injil and the Koran Quran and thereby) –

Quran 96:5 Verse 96:5 Taught the human (by revealing the Torah Taurat and the Psalms Zabur and the Gospel Injil and the Koran Quran) what (knowledge of God) they (the humans) did not know.

Comment 3. The word Iqra in Quran 96:1 and 96:3 means read or recite. Which word is correct?

Read means read the written word.

Recite means repeat what has been said to you.

Nowhere in the Quran does God say Prophet Muhammad cannot read and write.

The idea that Prophet Muhammad could not read and write came from a misunderstanding of the meaning of lettered and unlettered in the Quran and the following hadith story from humans about the first revelation to Prophet Muhammad.

Hadith of Sahih Bukhari Volume 1 Book 1 Number 3.

Narrated by 'Aisha (the mother of the faithful believers):

The commencement of the Divine Inspiration to God's Apostle was in the form of good dreams which came true like bright day light, and then the love of seclusion was bestowed upon him.

He used to go in seclusion in the cave of Hira where he used to worship (God alone) continuously for many days before his desire to see his family.

He used to take with him the journey food for the stay and then come back to (his wife) Khadija to take his food like-wise again till suddenly the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Hira.

The angel came to him and asked him to read

The angel came to him and asked him to recite

The Prophet replied, 'I do not know how to read'

Note 1: meaning I do not know how to recite meaning what shall I recite?

The Prophet replied, "What shall I recite?"

The Prophet added, "The angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it any more.

He then released me and again asked me to read

He then released me and again asked me to recite.

and I replied, 'I do not know how to read'

Note 1: meaning I do not know how to recite meaning what shall I recite?

and I replied, "What shall I recite?"

Thereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it any more.

He then released me and again asked me to read

He then released me and again asked me to recite.

but again I replied, 'I do not know how to read (or what shall I read)?'

Comment: This hadith has included in brackets confirmation that I do not know how to read means what shall I read?

This hadith confirms that the true meaning of I do not know how to recite means what shall I recite?

Angel Gabriel Jibril did not bring a book to read which confirms that Prophet Muhammad is responding with the words what shall I recite?

but again I replied, "What shall I recite?"

Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said, 'Read

Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said, "Recite.

in the name of your Lord, who has created (all that exists) has created man from a clot. Read!

Read means recite by repeating the words spoken to you by Angel Gabriel Jibril.

in the name of your Lord, who has created (all that exists) has created man from a clot. Recite!

And your Lord is the Most Generous." (96.1, 96.2, 96.3).

Note 1: Sahih Bukhari Volume 1 Book 1 Number 3 shows that the correct meaning of “read” is "recite" by repeating the words spoken to you by Angel Gabriel Jibril in Quran 96.1, 96.2, 96.3.

Quran 2:252 Verse 2:252 These are the revelations of God. We (God through Angel Gabriel Jibril) recite them to you (Prophet Muhammad) with the truth, and indeed you are one of the Messengers (of God).

Quran 75:16 Verse 75:16 (Prophet Muhammad) do not recite to hurry (the memorization of) it (the Quran).

Quran 75:17 Verse 75:17 It is Us (God) who have accumulated it (the Quran, in your memory) and (made possible) its recitation.

Quran 75:18 Verse 75:18 So when We (God) recite it (the Quran, through the Holy Spirit, angel Gabriel Jibril), then follow its recitation (by repeating what you heard).

Then God's Apostle returned with the Inspiration and with his heart beating severely. Then he went to Khadija bint Khuwailid and said, "Cover me! Cover me!"

They covered him till his fear was over and after that he told her everything that had happened and said, "I fear that something may happen to me."

Khadija replied, "Never! By God, God will never disgrace you.

You keep good relations with your Kith and kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones." Khadija then accompanied him to her cousin Waraqa bin Naufal bin Asad bin 'Abdul 'Uzza, who, during the Pre-Islamic Period became a Christian and used to write the writing with Hebrew letters.

He would write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as God wished him to write.

He was an old man and had lost his eyesight.

Khadija said to Waraqa, "Listen to the story of your nephew, O my cousin!"

Waraqa asked, "O my nephew! What have you seen?"

God's Apostle described whatever he had seen.

Waraqa said, "This is the same one who keeps the secrets (angel Gabriel) whom God had sent to Moses.

I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out."

God's Apostle asked, "Will they drive me out?"

Waraqa replied in the affirmative and said, "Anyone (man) who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be turned out then I would support you strongly."

But after a few days Waraqa died and the Divine Inspiration was also paused for a while.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah Al-Ansari while talking about the period of pause in revelation reporting the speech of the Prophet

"While I was walking, all of a sudden I heard a voice from the sky.

I looked up and saw the same angel who had visited me at the cave of Hira' sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth.

I got afraid of him and came back home and said, 'Wrap me (in blankets).'

And then God revealed the following Holy Verses (of Quran): 'O you (i.e. Muhammad)! Wrapped up in garments!' Arise and warn (the people against God's Punishment).... up to 'and desert the idols.' (74.1-5)

After this the revelation started coming strongly, frequently and regularly."

Quran 11:56 Verse 11:56 “I have put my trust in God (who is) my Lord and your Lord. There is not a living creature that He (God) does not grasp by its forelock (meaning, grasp by the hair that falls over your forehead, in other words, God has full control over everyone that God has created). My Lord is on a path that is straight (in truth and justice).”
