Purpose: Reflective Supervision
GHC recognizes that supervision is critical to the continuous improvement of program quality and the individual growth and professional development of each staff member at GHC. GHC requires that all direct supervisors implement consistent supervision (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly). Supervision provides the following benefits:
Supervision is an essential component of practice at all levels of an organization
Effective supervision provides a safe space for all staff to reflect on their practice, as well as to develop skills and knowledge base as it relates to their role
The delivery of supervision is heavily dependent on the organizational and departmental context
Available evidence and data points to effective supervision being associated with job satisfaction, organizational commitment and retention of staff
Delivering effective supervision is a skilled task that requires support and training for all supervisors who deliver supervision
The Cornerstones of Reflective Supervision
Supervision Guidelines
Managers should conduct individual reflective supervision with direct supervisees. Reflective supervision helps build a collaborative relationship between the supervisor and the staff. Reflection provides an opportunity to take time away from the immediate, intense experience of direct service an provide an alternative perspective to the staff challenges they may encounter day-to-day and opportunities to troubleshoot long term challenges.
When conducting reflective supervisions the following guidelines should be applied:
Supervisions should be held in a private space
Supervisions should be a minimum of 30 mins to 1 hour
A record must be maintained of all conducted supervisions
Canceled supervision should be rescheduled before the next regularly scheduled supervision takes place
