Classroom Observations Cycles
Classroom Observations
GHC recognizes the importance of continual support in classrooms for teachers and students; because of this GHC provides teaching staff with Infant Toddler Specialists (0-3) and Education Coordinator (3-5). While teachers will undergo individual coaching sessions (found in the Practice-Based Coaching Section), coordinators and specialists will continue to conduct weekly classroom observations to support day-to-day practices and occurrences in the classroom. Observations provide intentional and proactive support that informs classroom management and curriculum practices. Through observations of the different aspects of the classroom environment, such as the daily schedule, the age-appropriateness of the activities and routines, and the arrangement of the physical elements, coordinators and specialists can often determine whether the environment is conducive to learning and what supports are needed to provide quality care.
CLASS Observations 0-5
The Classroom Assessment Scoring System, referred to as CLASS, is a program observation tool used to support quality improvement with the specific goal of improving child outcomes. This nationally recognized tool is equitable since it supports a variety of curricula and philosophies and can support any program type. CLASS is a nationally recognized tool for measuring adult-child interactions. Children in classrooms with higher CLASS scores have been demonstrated to have better social-emotional, cognitive, and academic outcomes. CLASS is used across the country in Head Start programs, Quality Recognition Improvement Systems like Great Start to Quality, and in all childcare program types serving a variety of age groups. GHC classrooms are observed twice a year respective to the age group of the classroom. The grantee observation sessions render certified classroom observers in cycles; results are then shared with the Education Coordinator and Infant Toddler Specialist, who hold debriefing sessions with the Site Manager and Teacher.
