Responding to Emergencies
Each site will include in its parent handbook the procedures for child health emergencies requiring immediate attention, such as accidents or illnesses requiring emergency services to be called or rescue medication to be administered. Then, during the parent orientation session, the procedures are reviewed. For an illness or injury that requires the immediate attention of a healthcare professional, you must:
Contact emergency medical services (or take the child to the nearest emergency room after you have ensured the supervision of other children in the group).
Give the child first-aid treatment or CPR when needed.
Contact the child's parent.
Contact the physician or other healthcare professional identified in the child's record.
Ensure supervision of other children in the group.
Ensure non-movement of a severely injured or ill child except to save a life.
Follow orders given in Action Plan completed by physician. Staff will use handheld communication devices or intercom to call for help and not leave an ill or injured child alone. Staff will remain with the child until the parent/guardian arrives. Then, if necessary, the staff will accompany the child in the ambulance to the hospital.
Staff will document information in an incident/illness report accordingly. The parent will sign the form; a copy will be given to the parent/guardian, and the original will remain in the family file (Health Section).
Site managers will track all incident/illness report accidents and be kept in the office.
Licensing must be notified immediately if the child requires immediate medical attention.
All reports will be monitored and uploaded into the GHC electronic tracking system.
