Onboarding and Safety Training
GHC requires that before or during the first three months of employment, training, and orientation must detail health and safety issues for early care and education settings including, but not limited to, typical and atypical child development; pediatric first aid and CPR; safe sleep practices, including risk reduction of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome/Sudden Unexplained Infant Death (SIDS); poison prevention; shaken baby syndrome and abusive head trauma; standard precautions; emergency preparedness; nutrition and age-appropriate feeding; medication administration; and care plan implementation for children with special health care needs. Caregivers/teachers must complete training before administering medication to children. All directors, program administrators, and caregivers/teachers should document the receipt of training.
Staff Training
All program staff must know:
▪ the primary and secondary evacuation route for the classroom or office they are in
▪ evacuation procedures
▪ shelter-in-place procedures (in case of a tornado or other exterior threat or danger)
▪ lockdown procedures for the classroom or office they are in (in case of interior threat or danger)
▪ the location of fire extinguishers and how to use them
▪ the location and contents of first aid kits
▪ who is acting as site director
▪ injury, medical emergency, and dental emergency procedures 80
All program staff must be trained on the evacuation routes, shelter-in-place and lockdown procedures, and the location and use of fire extinguishers and first aid kits. The Site Director or designated
