Year 9 Advanced Mathematics explores similar topics to Year 9 Mainstream Mathematics, but with more depth and breadth. More reasoning and problem-solving skills are required to dive deeper into the topics studied.
Students will be introduced to the CAS calculator and will use it to solve problems and analyse graphs in suitable topics. Students will also experience investigations and build on their critical thinking skills. Students will be expected to have a copy of the prescribed textbook, a CAS calculator, and a scientific calculator.
Enrolment into Year 9 Advanced Mathematics is by application only. Successful applicants will demonstrate a high-level aptitude in mathematics through the completion of an entry test, results from Year 7 NAPLAN and their PAT results from Year 7 and 8. They also require a recommendation from their Mathematics teacher and/or their Year 8 Coordinator and have demonstrated evidence of excellent organisational skills through Progress and Semester Reports. Students need to have demonstrated a continued high-level of commitment to their studies, both behaviorally and academically. Successful applicants will be notified in late Term 3 by the Head of Mathematics and Numeracy. Year 9 Advanced Mathematics will replace Year 9 Standard Mathematics.
