UNIT 1
In this unit, students read and view texts to connect personally with characters, settings, and themes. They explore how authors use language, structure, and voice to shape meaning and reflect real-life experiences. Students reflect on their own lives as they consider cultural, social, and historical values in the texts. They also build writing skills by studying strong examples (mentor texts) and creating their own imaginative, persuasive, and informative pieces. By thinking about audience, purpose, and context, students learn how to craft meaningful and effective writing across different text types.
UNIT 2
Students build on their reading and writing skills by exploring a new text type. They look closely at how language, structure, and style create meaning, and consider how social, cultural, and historical contexts shape a text. Students connect these ideas to their own experiences and use evidence to support their interpretations in analytical writing. They also study how arguments are presented in media. By analysing persuasive strategies, language and visuals in real-world issues, students learn how to identify a viewpoint and craft their own persuasive oral presentation.
Assessment tasks could include:
An analytical response to a set text
A personal response to a set text
A student-created text such as: short stories, speeches (with transcripts), essays (comment, opinion, reflective, personal), podcasts (with transcripts), poetry/songs, feature articles (including a series of blog postings) and memoirs
A description of writing processes
A set of annotated persuasive texts (including visual texts) that identify arguments, vocabulary, text structures and language features
An analysis of the use of argument and persuasive strategies in text(s)
An oral presentation of a point of view text.
UNIT 3
Students explore how great writing is crafted by studying mentor texts; strong examples that show how language, structure, and style come together to engage readers. Using these as inspiration, they create their own texts, experimenting with ideas, voice, and form. They reflect on the choices they make in the writing process. Students also read and analyse a text in depth, exploring character motivations, themes, and how the text reflects its cultural and historical context. Through class discussions and essay writing, they build skills in critical thinking, evidence use, and formal writing structure.
UNIT 4
Students deepen their reading and analysis skills by exploring how authors present ideas, concerns, and values in texts. They examine how historical, social, and cultural contexts shape meaning and influence readers. Through class discussions and essay writing, students build confidence in analysing and responding to texts with evidence and clear structure. They also study how media texts use argument, language, and visuals to influence audiences on current issues. By exploring various media formats, students learn to critically assess persuasive techniques. They apply this knowledge to write and deliver a well-structured, persuasive oral presentation.
Assessment tasks could include:
Analytical responses to a text/s in written form
A written text constructed in consideration of audience
Purpose and context accompanied by a commentary reflecting on writing processes
An analytical response to argument in written form.
A point of view oral presentation.
