The VCE Vocational Major is a two-year senior secondary certificate that incorporates vocational and applied learning studies to prepare students to move into apprenticeships, traineeships, further education and training university (via non-ATAR pathways), or directly into a workforce. The VCE Vocational Major graduates will NOT receive an ATAR.
The VCE Vocational Major and the Victorian Pathways Certificate was introduced in 2023, replacing the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)
The VCE-Vocational Major program offered by Frankston High School has been designed to both meet the
eligibility criteria as set by the VCAA and meets the specific vocational and applied learning needs of our
extraordinary student cohort.
In 2026, VCE Vocational Major Personal Development Skills projects included The Brew Crew, with students learning barista skills in Frankston High School's on-site cafe, The Big Fish.
As part of the VCE Vocational Major program, students are required to undertake Structured Workplace
Learning (SWL) each year at Frankston High School.
Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) involves a student finding an industry placement aligned with their VET program, which can give them experience and an understanding of work and career opportunities within that industry. The student generally observes various aspects of the work within the industry and is given relevant tasks to complete under supervision.
SWL provides an opportunity for students to apply what they have learnt in their VET program to the real-
world work context and develop their employability skills.
Students will be required to commence their search for a work placement in the latter half of the year before they commence VCE VM with a view to commencing as early as possible in Term 1 of VCE VM.
See Vocational Education and Training - VET for more information.
Students select a VET certificate which they are expected to continue to its completion at the end of Year 12.
To achieve their VCE Vocational Major they must complete 180 hours of VET at Cert II level or above.
Students cannot change VET subjects. It is important to recognise that VET is a nationally recognised
qualification and that in some instances, only a partial completion of a certificate is possible at the end of two years. In these instances, students are still eligible for their VCE Vocational Major certificate.
As with any subject, VET offerings are also dependent upon timetabling and availability. The selection of a
VET certificate does not automatically guarantee placement in that program. Our VET providers determine
availability and placements. Our VET Coordinator will work closely with students if they need to change their VET subject selection. These decisions are made by our VET providers.
• Submission of a completed expression of interest form. This can be accessed through Compass
Insights and must be completed online by the due date in Term 3 (date and time communicated through Optima and Careers Team).
*Late applications will not be accepted.
• Attend a course counselling interview.
• Evidence of good behaviour as demonstrated in school reports and coordinator records.
• Evidence of required commitment to studies (demonstrated through student attendance, results and
work habits as reflected in Year 10 reports).
• Students must satisfy their Semester 2, Year 10 studies to be assured of retaining their place in the
VCE-Vocational Major certificate pathway.
• Current VCE Year 11 students seeking a transfer into the VCE Vocational Major must arrange an
appointment with the Head of Year and Careers Coordinator prior to course selection to discuss the
available options. Students must achieve satisfactory results in VCE Year 11 to be considered for
transitions into the VCE Vocational Major. The VCAA have set strict transitional requirements which
must be met by students applying for a transfer. There are limited opportunities available to current
VCE Year 11 students to transfer into this pathway.
• Students and Parent / Carers must sign a declaration which confirms that a student will not attain an
ATAR if they select the VCE Vocational Major.
