UNIT 1
This unit is an intensive course in DSLR photography where students build their understanding of composition techniques, design principles, along with camera settings and effects which enable them to take visually engaging images. Students will develop an understanding of the relationship between the media, technology and representation in media texts across time.
UNIT 2
This unit is an intensive course in video production where students learn about pre-production, production and post-production and use this knowledge to develop their own video productions. Students develop an understanding of the specialist production stages and roles within a media production. Students also examine the influence of new media technologies on society, audiences, media industries and institutions, with a particular focus on analysing the intentions of media creators and producers.
Photographs, video productions, digital folio of practical work, short answer test, video essay, coursework.
UNIT 3
Students analyse how media codes and conventions convey meaning in a narrative film. They study how the film’s construction is influenced by the social, cultural, ideological and institutional contexts of production, distribution, consumption and reception. Students consider how audiences from different periods of time and contexts are engaged by, consume and read narratives using appropriate media language. Students commence work on their SAT Production, and choose to work in one media form such as film, photography, animation, zine, etc. They engage in exploration and investigations, experimentation and reflection. Students then complete all the pre-production planning work for their SAT Production.
UNIT 4
Students work through the production and post production stages of their SAT Production. Students shoot their final photographic images or their final sequence for their video productions, and edit these to create a final polished media production. Students learn about the relationship between the media and its audience and consider how each can exert their influence. They consider the implications of this dynamic and challenging relationship, and the issues that arise due to the impact of new technologies.
Assessment can include written reports, short answer and extended response test, video essay, digital folio of SAT production work, final production (e.g. photography, film, animation, zine), coursework. The level of achievement for Units 3 and 4 is also assessed by an end-of-year examination.
