UNIT 1
Students explore and develop their understanding of how music is organised and impacts an audience. By performing, creating, analysing and responding to music works that exhibit different moods and styles, students explore and develop their understanding of music. They prepare and perform ensemble and solo pieces to develop technical control, expression and stylistic understanding on their chosen instrument. They create (arrange, compose or improvise) short music exercises and entire pieces that reflect their understanding of the organisation and impact of music and the processes they have studied. They develop knowledge of music language concepts as they analyse and respond to a range of music, becoming familiar with the ways music creators treat elements of music and concepts and use compositional devices to create works that communicate their ideas.
UNIT 2
In this unit, students learn how music can create different moods or effects. They practice performing solo or with others, focusing on improving their skills and expressing different styles. Students also create their own music, either by composing, arranging, or improvising, to show what they have learned about how music works. They listen to and analyse various pieces of music to understand how composers use different musical elements to express ideas. As they explore these concepts, students become better at identifying, recreating, and writing down musical ideas, helping them create music that communicates a specific effect.
Assessment could include:
Performances of at least two solo works and one ensemble/group work per unit
Demonstration and discussion of the challenges presented by these works and solutions to these challenges in the form of instrumental exercises
Reimagining of a songs or musical pieces, documenting creative decisions and their purposes
Exams on music analysis, theory and aural skills.
This subject requires a minimum skill level on their instrument/s. It is highly recommended that students receive one-on-one lessons on their instrument with an internal or external instrument teacher. The VCE Music Teacher should be consulted upon their enrollment.
UNIT 3
Students begin preparing their Unit 4 recital program, exploring historical performance practices and interpretative traditions. They analyse technical, expressive, and stylistic challenges in their chosen works, refining performance strategies for assessment. Through listening and analysis of recorded music, students deepen their understanding of musical elements and compositional devices. They also develop skills in identifying, recreating, and notating musical language, including scales, melodies, chords, harmony, and rhythm.
UNIT 4
Students build on their Unit 3 performance program in preparation for their final recital. They explore historical and interpretative traditions, using music analysis to refine their performance. Students address technical, expressive, and stylistic challenges and present their strategies in a school-based oral presentation. They analyse interpretations across various musical styles and develop skills in identifying and notating musical elements such as scales, melodies, chords, harmony, and rhythm.
Students will complete a range of assessments which may include the following:
Prepare and perform a recital program, demonstrating technical and expressive skills
Complete a short written or oral task explaining their program choices and performance strategies
Discuss and demonstrate a range of informed approaches to performance practice.
Analyse interpretations across various musical styles and identify how elements and compositional devices can be manipulated to create intended effects.
Identify, recreate, and notate music language concepts.
The level of achievement for Units 3 and 4 is also assessed by an end-of-year examination.
This subject requires a minimum skill level on their instrument/s. It is highly recommended that students receive one-on-one lessons on their instrument with an internal or external instrument teacher. The VCE Music Teacher should be consulted upon their enrollment.
