Students who demonstrate positive learning behaviours and a strong aptitude for learning may apply to accelerate and complete one Year 11 subject (Unit 1 and 2) in Year 10. It is expected that students then apply to continue with this accelerated subject in Year 11 and study the Year 12 equivalent (Unit 3 and 4). One benefit of doing this may mean that they finish their Year 12 at Frankston High School with a maximum of 6 scores that can contribute to their ATAR. Another is that they gain exposure to the VCE program in Year 10 and the opportunities and learning extensions that this brings with it.
Students wishing to undertake an accelerated program must complete the application process by the due date to be considered. Students must also select a minimum of three VCE subjects in preference order.
Students wishing to complete VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies will only be able to do so as an accelerated subject. This means they will need to commence this study in Year 10 and complete the subject in Year 11. In some circumstances students may be able to access other VCE subjects or may wish to study more than one if this is the recommendation by a specialist teacher or Sub School Team. It is recommended that students do not undertake more than one VCE subject in Year 10 and focus on doing one to the best of their abilities.
Students may consider doing a VCE Subject in Year 10 if:
1. They like to challenge themselves in their learning
2. The subject is a pre-requisite for their future university course
3. They want to further develop and practise the study skills that are necessary for success at the VCE level
4. They want to maximise their final ATAR score by completing six Unit 3 and 4 subjects in total
5. They have a special aptitude for the subjects being offered
6. Their teachers and parents/carers recommend it
7. They wish to complete a number of folio subjects in VCE and want to spread the workload across three years
Students wishing to undertake an accelerated program in Year 10 are required to submit an application that shows they meet the following criteria:
1. The student has maintained 90% + attendance rates
2. The student is demonstrating strong motivation to achieve their personal best
3. The student has high literacy skills demonstrated by their reports and other summative assessments
4. The student is demonstrating the required ‘readiness’ to work with older students
5. The student receives positive learning endorsements from their current classroom teachers
Applications are completed through Compass Insights by students. Parents and endorsing teachers will also need to endorse applications through Compass Insights.
The process of applying will be before subject selections in Term 3, with applications opening in Term 2 of the year prior. No late applications can be accepted. Please check the due date for applications carefully.
You will be reminded when they open, also during the FHS subject selection and webinar videos in late June.

Applications are required for students who wish to continue a VCE subject that was studied at Unit 1 & 2 in Year 10, for those wishing to change the subject they have accelerated in and for those wishing to start accelerating in a subject at Unit 3 & 4 in Year 11.
