Changing Name After Marriage

As per IRCC, there's no such mandatory requirement. Women can keep their maiden names after marriage.

As per Pakistani Law, women MUST change their legal guardian's name in CNIC/Passport AFTER marriage OR divorce.

Your Govt. ID (such as CNIC & Passport) cannot be renewed if you are married and you have not applied for modification of CNIC After marriage.

For Legal Guardians:

  • Single : Father's Name
  • Married : Husband's Name
  • Divorced : Father's Name

Note: Most applicants don't face any issue unless until they apply for renewal of documents inside Pakistan or Pakistani consulates/embassies/highcommissions.

IMPORTANT

  • Name Change for married Female applicant is not mandatory for Spousal Sponsorship.
  • Applicants from many countries don't change surnames after marriage.
  • Quebec province have made it illegal for a woman to take her husband's name — or vice versa, for that matter (since 1981).
  • In terms of benefits, having husband's surname in wife's passport has no benefit at all
