Ernest Henry WATSON

(1904-1982)

WATSON, ERNEST HENRY (b. Collingwood, Vic, 17 Jan 1904; d. Sydney, NSW, 22 Aug 1982). Baptist evangelist and minister.

Son of Rev and Mrs E L Watson, E H Watson gained his ARCM (London Royal College of Music), studied at the NSW Baptist Theological College, and was ordained in 1934. He was pastor at Mortdale, NSW (1930-36), Unley Park, SA (1936-47), Aberdeen Street Geelong, Vic (1947-52) and Central, Sydney (1952-55). He was chaplain with the AIF (1942-45). Watson became secretary of the Baptist Union of NSW (1955-57) before becoming NSW director of Evangelism (195769) during which time he developed a strong radio and TV evangelistic ministry. Watson was active as a leader in Youth for Christ, CE, as well as being president of the Council of Churches in NSW (1960/62) and president of Baptist Unions in SA (1942/43) and NSW (1970/71). He received an honorary D Mus from John Brown University (Arkansas) in 1954. In retirement he served the Haggai Institute in Singapore.
