Francis Hardy FAULDING

(1816-1868)

FAULDING, FRANCIS HARDY (b. Swinefleet, Yorkshire, England, 1816, baptised 23 Aug 1816; d. Adelaide, SA, 19 Nov 1868). Pharmacist and philanthropist.

Faulding was the son of Francis Faulding, a surgeon, and Mary Ann Hardy (m. Whitgift, 7 Sept 1815). He emigrated to Sydney as an assistant surgeon, but proceeded to Adelaide, arriving on 19 May 1842 and immediately engaged in land speculation. By 19 May 1845 he had founded a retail and manufacturing pharmacy business.

Faulding's sister, Eliza, followed him to Adelaide on 30 May 1851, and on 25 August 1852, married Faulding's long-time business acquaintance and fellow Wesleyan, Thomas Waterhouse. A month later, on 16 September Faulding married Eliza, the second daughter of Robert Forsyth MacGeorge of Urrbrae.

Faulding took Luther Scammell, a physician, into partnership on 8 June 1861, and thereafter assumed a higher profile in the business life of Adelaide as a trustee of the Savings Bank, a member of the Adelaide City Council and the Chamber of Commerce and a director of the South Australian Insurance Company; on 19 February 1867, he became a director of the Bank of Adelaide.

As a prominent Wesleyan Methodist, Faulding supported many of the endeavours of the church, providing funds for the building of the Kent Town Wesleyan Church and the development of Prince Alfred College.

Faulding died without issue, leaving an estate valued at £56 000. Included in his will were legacies for various church charities, including the Wesleyan Missionary Society, the Wesleyan Home Mission, the Wesleyan Worn-out Ministers' Fund, the Adelaide Reformatory, the Adelaide Benevolent and Strangers' Friend Society and LMS.

Faulding's share of the pharmaceutical business passed to Luther Scammell.
