William Buckton ANDREWS

(1829-1918)

ANDREWS, WILLIAM BUCKTON (b. Epping England, 24 Nov 1829; d. Adelaide, SA, 3 Feb 1918). Anglican clergyman.

Fifth child of an attorney, Andrews studied theology privately. He arrived in Adelaide in 1854. Deaconed 1855, priested 1856, he was sent by Bp Short to Penola, where he served as the first Anglican missionary clergyman in that vast region. After two more settled appointments he went to St Bartholomew's, Norwood 1874-1914 during its period of middle class growth. He oversaw the usual building program and by the 1890s could claim the largest Sunday school in the diocese. Ever the gentleman, his ministry was diligent and non-controversial. While no opponent of due authority and episcopacy, Andrews retained a mid-century evangelical or at least low church outlook marked, for example, by his meticulous conformity to the Prayer Book. His long incumbency at Norwood provided an evangelical benchmark within an increasingly high church diocese.
