Edward HOGG

(1880-1953)

HOGG, EDWARD (b. Edinburgh, Scotland, 17 Dec 1880; d. Albany, WA, 13 Jan 1953). Baptist minister in WA.

Edward Hogg gave dedicated leadership within his denomination and to numerous interdenominational institutions over the 26 years he resided in WA.

In 1898 Hogg became a preacher within the Scottish Baptist Union. After pastoring a church on Westray, Orkney Islands (1916-26) he came to WA in Jan 1927 to be the minister of Bayswater Baptist Church, a position he held until his death 26 years later. For 17 years he was secretary of the Baptist Union (1933-7 1939-51), during this time he worked from his own home, even after the Union acquired limited office space in the city. At the time of his death Hogg was editor of the West Australian Baptist News, a position he held for 16 years. He was president of the Baptist Union 1937-8 and, being vice president when he died, was to have assumed the presidency for a second time later that year. He was secretary of the Australian Baptist Foreign Mission for many years and served on most other committees of the Baptist Union, including the College Committee.

On the wider scene, he was president of Christian Endeavour in WA for two years, and editor of the Golden Link for many. He was a founder and a president of the Kalamunda Convention and of the Deepening of the Spiritual Life movement in WA. Involved with the Perth Bible Institute from its inception in 1928, he served as councillor, tutor, and president. Interdenominational missions also had his support, notably UAM. For years he conducted daily devotional sessions on radio 618 [?] and 6WN. During World War Two his only son, Aubrey, was killed on active service in England. His only daughter, Evelyn, married Roy Lacy; they served as missionaries in Central Africa.
