Cyril Joseph Rutherford PRICE

(1898-1981)

PRICE, CYRIL JOSEPH RUTHERFORD (b. Timaru, Canterbury, NZ, 26 May 1898, d. Hamilton, Waikato, NZ, 15 July 1981). Teacher, missionary, youth worker and educational organiser.

Cyril Price was educated in New Zealand as a pupil teacher and accountant, also gaining MA, B Com degrees and later a BD in India. He was an NCO in the New Zealand army in World War One, and resumed teaching in 1919, at Marlborough College and Gore High School. He was relieving Principal of the Kharar, Punjab mission high school, 1928-29.

In 1929, Price became director of the Welfare of Youth for the Presbyterian Church in NSW and travelling secretary for the Presbyterian Fellowship Union. In 1939, he went to Sholingur, South India as PFU missionary, as school principal and diocesan secretary. In late 1951 he came back to NSW as a secondary school teacher. He returned to NZ, where he was head of Accounting at Hamilton Technical College, 1953-59. Price went back to Sydney in 1960 as superintendent of Religious Education in Schools for the Presbyterian Church. He was ordained in 1961 and returned to NZ to work for the Bible-in-schools scheme in Waikato, based at Hamilton, 1965-66. From 1967 to 1971 he taught and ministered in Hamilton and the New Hebrides. He and Grace Jackson were married in 1930 and had two daughters.
