Charlotte Mary HILL

HILL, CHARLOTTE MARY (b. WA, 1881; d. Daylesford, Vic, 17 Dec 1931). Pioneer CMS missionary.

Charlotte Hill was accepted by the Victorian CMA in Dec 1909 for mission service at the Roper River Mission, Arnhem Land. The CMA at the time W.IS undecided about sending women missionaries to endure the difficult living conditions in north Australia, and it was not until over a year later that the Association agreed that they could be cared for adequately at the mission. As a result Charlotte and Miss J Tinney were the first women missionaries to he located there. They arrived at the Roper River Mission on 16 May 1911, and were in charge of the medical and educational work at the mission for the next six years. Miss Tinney resigned in May 1917 and Charlotte at the end of 1918, leaving the mission on 4 March 1919 and arriving hack in Western Australia later in the year. She later moved to Vic and died at Daylesford on 17 Dec 1931.
