Samuel Pearce CAREY

(1862-1953)

CAREY, SAMUEL PEARCE (b. Wolverhampton, England, 4 March 1862; d. Dawlish, England, 10 Feb 1953). Baptist minister in Melbourne.

Carey was a great grandson of both the Rev William Carey, pioneer Baptist missionary in India, and the Rev Samuel Pearce of Birmingham. Educated at Tiverton and Regent's Park College, London, he graduated MA (London University) and pastored three churches in England before coming to Collins Street Baptist Church, Melbourne, in 1900.

Carey, a cultured evangelist and pastor with a particular interest in using great literature as an aid to his preaching, was president of the Baptist Union of Victoria (1903/4).

Carey returned to England in 1909, serving Baptist churches and publishing biographies of his ancestors, Samuel Pearce (nd), William Carey (1923, rev ed 1934). He was awarded an hon DD from Serampore College in 1943.
