Charles Dudley MALING

(1908-1991)

MALING, CHARLES DUDLEY (b. Surrey Hills, Vic, 17 Apr 1908 d. Melbourne, Vic, 6 Oct 1991). Anglican missionary clergyman.

After state schooling, and training at the Swinburne Tech, Maling took up a position as an industrial instructor at the Central School in Dodoma, Tanganyika (now Tanzania). During his first furlough in Australia he married Mary Nener. Following his ordination at Dodoma in 1940, Maling's second furlough (now as a CMS missionary) was extended to complete a course at the Melbourne Teachers' Training College. At the same time he obtained his ThL. He was ordained priest in 1944 and returned with his family to Tanganyika in February 1945. During the remainder of his missionary career, Maling occupied a number of responsible positions, being made a canon of the Dodoma Cathedral in 1953. He was in charge of the Adult Literacy Campaign from its inception in 1951 until his return to Australia in 1954. On his return to Melbourne, he was incumbent of Northcote from 1956-64 and vicar of Greensborough from 1964 until his retirement in 1977. He died in Melbourne, his wife predeceasing him in June 1989.

Throughout his ministry in Australia and overseas, he had a clear, evangelical stance, and was a great supporter of CMS and Ridley College, in addition to being an efficient pastor.
