Greetings to you in the Forgiving name of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
God has been so kind towards us despite the fact that millions have been affected by the Corona Pandemic and thousands have lost their lives too. Let’s continue to pray that the Lord may bring relief and cure from this deadly disease that bothers the whole world now almost for eight months.
Forgive andForgetting
Twenty years ago, there was a Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland, that was calling for restoration of peace and rest, between the British Government and the local factions, who were fighting for centuries. When the pact was successful people (the proponent and the opponents) started a new life with peace and rest.
After a period of five years, there was a meeting arranged by the media. I could see people from both the end came together and had their friendly dialogue that aimed at the national building endeavor. When they were bidding bye with each other, the viewers shed tears because some of them were unable shake hands with the former opponents. They had no hands because those precious hands were lost in the earlier unrest.
It is hard sometimes to forgive and forget the past; especially the affected. The message from the Cross is Jesus whole heartedly forgave all the offenders.
In the first reading passage, we find Joseph’s reaction towards his brothers. Of course, they did all evil against the young Joseph, separated him from his endeared father and the whole family. We know what sufferings, he underwent in life are. But still, he had no trace of vengeance kept in the heart. After the death of Jacob, they thought that he would take revenge. But he was so cool and actually cried, when they came for pardon and forgiveness. The very word is so striking when he said,
Genesis 50: 20-21
Even though you intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good, in order to preserve a numerous people, as he is doing today. So have no fear; I myself will provide for you and your little ones.” In this way he reassured them, speaking kindly to them.
This should be the Christian attitude. Jesus spoke of the impact of non-forgiving attitude. A king had forgiven a very huge loan that was pending on his steward. But the steward was not ready to forgive his subordinate, who owed him a tiny debt. The unforgiving nature of the 'forgiven steward' reached him. The King revoked his order of pardon and forgiveness.
Benefits of forgiveness
Forgiveness exercises of the core value of the Christian Faith; It reestablishes the lost relationships; it stops families being broken, many divorces can be avoided. There is a strong prevalence of love and tranquility that make of a good society, Forgiving an offender will make him to repent and the act of pardon will ensure a healthy mind.
How many times did we behave like the unforgiving steward? This steward was completely forgiven but was reluctant to forgive his servant. In fact, we cannot escape from the sight of the Lord. Pardon and forgiveness is the result of love and mercy.
The story of Abou Ben Adham , a Sufi saint is touching. He was ready to forgive the killer of his one and only son. He had experienced the pain of a suffering father, who had lost his son. He did not want the same to happen to another father or mother.
Our Lord has already forgiven us from all our sins and unfaithfulness, despite the fact we are simply behave as his enemies. Let us also have the same attitude that of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 4: 32
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
Prayer
Loving Heavenly Father, We thank you for your grace and forgiveness. Otherwise, we had no chance of survival, dear Lord. But you have sustained us, by your love and mercy. Help us, dear Lord, to have the attitude of forgiveness, like Joseph and our Lord Jesus Christ. May your mindset be imparted in us. In Jesus’ Name, we pray. Amen.
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight.
