God led the people of Israel, who in slavery for nearly four hundred years. And as they were passing through the wilderness, they perpetually murmured against God. King David acknowledges their behavior in (Psalm 78).

But their murmuring did not stop. They they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies. Punishment came in form of fiery serpents and many died.

Now, they came asking Moses for a panacea. God asked Moses to make a model of serpent in bronze and lift it high above the camp of Israel. And as a condition for healing, the sufferers were directed to look at the bronze serpent.

Why did the Lord tell them to make a bronze snake? - Image of a snake symbolizes death-. The bronze image of the serpent on wooden poles was the symbol of powerlessness of the serpent. It spoke that living God was more powerful than the non living bronze snake. This symbolic message was lifted high and above for all the sufferers to see and be healed.

In the New Testament, our Lord Jesus was quoting the same incident, to foretell his death on the cross. Yes, our Lord was lifted high on the cross of Calvary. And by looking at Jesus, we receive forgiveness of sins, victory over death and the gift of eternal life.

On many occasions, whenever the sick were brought, they looked at Jesus. He voluntarily said, “Your sins are forgiven”. This means that meaning looking unto Jesus will give us a hope of pardon and forgiveness.

Yes, John 3: 16, this ageless verse is adored and memorized by millions. This verse packs a great message. It reveals the great love of the Father who sent his begotten Son to redeem the world out of its pain, agony and death; and to save all from the eternal condemnation to eternal life.

When Adam and Eve listened to the voice of the serpent, they lost their spiritual garments and became naked and were ashamed. This is what exactly Satan would do in our lives. But, we are clothed in the dress of salvation and the robes of righteousness. (Isaiah 61: 10)

If we see any medical symbol, it shows a dead serpent on a cross. Yes, Jesus put an end to the eternal death by His own death. And there is no more venom or death that would bother mankind.

Prayer
Loving Father, thank you, for this day of worship. Thank you for the message that you have given us. Yes, Lord, because of our rebellion, we tend to be under the curse of sinful death but you gave us life through your Son Jesus Christ. Help us, dear Lord, to look to Jesus Christ and to be saved. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
